Probably not everyone or engineers are aware that 4th of every March has been proclaimed “World Engineering Day" (WED), a day set aside for Sustainable Development awareness.
This year's 4th of March will make it the fifth WED which was meant to be celebrated annually on every 4th of March. It started in 2020 after it was proclaimed in 2019 by the United Nationals Educations, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) at its 40th General Conference. This was based on a proposal from the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO).
The day offers an opportunity to highlight engineers and engineering’s achievements in our modern world and improve public understanding of how engineering and technology are central to modern life and for sustainable development.
An international day with coordinated celebrations across the world is a brilliant opportunity to increase the profile of engineering. The day is also an opportunity to engage with government and industry to address the need for engineering capacity and the quality of engineers around the world and develop strategic frameworks and best practices for the implementation of engineering solutions for sustainable development.
This year's theme, "Engineering Solutions for Sustainable World" is to explore the innovative engineering approaches aimed at fostering a more sustainable future for generations to come.
In the subsequent post to come, I will use this medium to contribute to the little experience I have gathered In the course of my work with a governmental agency and private companies, spanning from the Construction, ICT, and Iron & Steel making industry. I have also contributed immensely in awareness and development of sustainable materials and environment which are part of the United Nation’s SDGs agenda.
