A recent article by Ruth Herbert MPhys FEI, CEO of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association, highlighted the urgent need for a robust CO2 transport and storage infrastructure between the UK and EU, as well as the key challenges and opportunities this effort would involve. Herbert emphasises the role of technical measures, such as a mutual recognition of standards, to facilitate cross-border projects, despite political uncertainties. She also sees optimism in the European Commission's industrial carbon management strategy, which outlines a vision for CO2 transport and storage in Europe. A big thank you to Enes Tunagur for featuring my colleague Peter Jonathan Jameson and me in this article about the interesting future of CO2 transportation.   At BCG, we fully recognize the strategic importance of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) as a crucial element in achieving our environmental objectives by 2050. Additionally, we see strong reasons to favor transporting CO2 by vessels, which offers significant flexibility compared to traditional pipeline methods in certain projects.   However, despite its potential, the CCS industry is still in its early stages and faces considerable challenges. Currently, the hesitation among shipowners to invest in CO2 carriers is largely due to the lack of long-term contracts and sufficient government incentives.

Big News from CCSA & ZEP! THE CARBON CAPTURE AND STORAGE ASSOCIATION (CCSA) and the Zero Emissions Platform (ZEP) have just released an insightful joint report titled “Achieving a European Market for CO2 Transport by Ship.” This significant study examines the growing sector of CO2 transportation via sea routes, a crucial component in the effective implementation of the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) strategy throughout Europe, vital for the decarbonization of industries. Report Highlights: - An in-depth analysis of the expected landscape of Europe's CO2 transport market by 2030. - An assessment of the compatibility and cooperation potential between various CO2 shipping systems. - An exploration into the obstacles and facilitators for the commercial success of CO2 transportation by sea. The report is the result of collaborative efforts by the CO2 Transport by Ship Working Group, convened by ZEP and the CCSA. It's objective is to provide policymakers with comprehensive policy and technical recommendations, targeting the development of a robust and sustainable CO2 shipping industry. "The EU is promising that CO2 storage will eventually be available — but manufacturers in Europe’s poorer regions are worried it won’t be within reach." This POLITICO Europe article is now free to read. Federica Di Sario explores where the CO2 storage projects are emerging in Europe, and what the challenges are for industries in Southern Central and Eastern Europe, where little project development is happening. Glad to be quoted among other #CCS experts: "To keep the costs of decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries at bay, Europe needs CO2 storage projects across the Continent," said Eve Tamme, who chairs the Zero Emissions Platform, an organization advising the EU on carbon capture technology. “This helps to limit the need for expensive long-distance CO2 transportation routes." The next step towards decarbonised truck transport has been made!! 🚛 The European Council agreed on enhanced CO2 emission standards for heavy-duty vehicles. 🌱 🇪🇺 The proposed targets: ▫️2030: 45% CO2 reduction ▫️2035: 65% CO2 reduction ▫️2040: 90% CO2 reduction ▪️ each one compared to the year 2019 This approach serves now as a mandate for the negotiations with the European Parliament to elaborate the final shape of the legislation.

Well it looks like the EU Council has strengthe/toughten the CO2 emission benchmark targets for heavy truck OEM's although small volume players will get an exemption. Flexibility will be allowed for member states and there's a nod to the practical issues by creating an extra sector for extra heavy combinations. It means the CO2 emissions are proposed to be 45% by 2030, 65% by 2035 and 90% by 2040 compared to 2019 levels. It would appear there was a rather bitter battle over the Italian proposal for a Carbon Correction Factor, basically a low emission not zero emission stance. The zero emission lobby looks to have won this. Of course, there's a long way to go before this is passed as law and it only confirms we are going in one direction towards a zero emission road transport industry with the blessing of nearly all the major European OEM's!! https://lnkd.in/dzzhUPqU

Once again, EU institutions missed the opportunity to set a technologically open path towards road transport #decarbonization. Today, negotiators of the European Commission, Council of the European Union and European Parliament reached an agreement on revised #CO2standards for Heavy Duty Vehicles #HDV. The agreed text does not include any measure to acknowledge the contribution of #carbonneutralfuels to reach the decarbonization targets. Any decision is left to the future review of the Regulation, which should be finalized by 2027: the EBB European Biodiesel Board is ready to contribute to the debate in the next legislative term, for an informed decision-making, which should ensure an effective and affordable road transport decarbonization process. https://lnkd.in/gqGH2f8h
