Is it really a whole week since I set off to London to get ready for my first London Marathon? "How was it?" I've had a few people ask.. It's hard to put into words, but I'll have a go at a few that come to mind: 👟Epic 👟Euphoric 👟Tough 👟Emotional 👟Rewarding The hardest part was the months of training, the build up, the stress of working out how to get to London when there's train strikes. And then there's the packing - I've never packed so much for a weekend away (energy gels, hydration, snacks to name a few items that took up a fair bit of space). It's true what experienced runners told me - the marathon itself is your lap of honour. I can vouch for this - London felt like one big party and whilst I wished the pain towards the end away, the brilliant memories will last a lifetime. The crowd support was spectacular and uplifting. The rewarding bit comes down to smashing my charity target for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. All of the well wishes and donations flooding in as the big day arrived was a great motivator I'm so grateful for every one of them. At One Impossible Thing we want to break down barriers that impede people from participating in sport. Redistributing preloved sports shoes to those who struggle to afford them, is our main way of doing this. But we also know that sometimes motivation is a barrier from getting out there and being active. Which is why we're involved in organising the Boxmoor Virtual Marathon! The idea is to run, bike, scoot, walk, swim or wheel your way through the 26 miles/42kms, over a ten week period. In this Olympic year, the virtual marathon starts when the Olympic Flame arrives in France on 8th May. You have until mid July to complete your marathon, so you can have your finishers medal in time for the Olympic Opening Ceremony! It’s a great challenge for families, who can get out together on their bikes or on a walk together. If you do 5kms each week, you’ll have completed your marathon by July, with time to spare! All money raised through sponsorship will ensure we can carry on with all the work we do with schools, homeless charities, refugees groups and school holiday activity camps. Today we’re about to embark on a charity fundraising challenge, to row 544,000 metres (344 miles) on rowing machines in our gym at work. It’s a team effort, so I’m confident we’ll achieve the distance within the maximum time of 24 hours that we’ve allowed ourselves to complete it. Not that I’m expecting it to be easy, we’ve not had that many team members volunteer to take part! Such is the attraction of rowing for several hours, especially all through the night! Either way, what I’m most excited about are the multiple benefits of doing such a challenge. 1. We will raise valuable funds for our local hospice (our aim is £10k which we’re well on target to achieve). 2. We will raise the profile of our business through people sharing this challenge with new people. 3. We will increase our social media followers and connections, especially as we aim to attract more people to watch the livestream. 4. We will work together as a team and achieve something meaningful, bringing us closer together. 5. We are bringing our brand values to life by setting a challenging goal, helping other people, finding a way to make it a success, hopefully exceeding our target, and enjoying the journey throughout. When there are so many benefits to such a challenge, it really doesn’t matter how hard it is to achieve, the “why” is big enough so you’re motivated to get it done. Sometimes we’re limited not by what we’re capable of doing, but by the reasons that exist to actually do whatever it is. Make it about other people, or causes you care about, and you’ll be amazed what you are capable of, if it really matters to you. #everydays

Participating in the Champagne & Oyster Cycling Club of Monaco’s Annual St. Tropez to Monaco Charity Bike Ride for the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation was an inspiring and humbling experience. As we pedaled through the stunning landscapes, it struck me how similar this journey is to the path companies take when striving for growth and success. Just like a long-distance ride, building and nurturing a business requires endurance, teamwork, and a clear vision of the goal. Fundraising for a charity and for a business share common threads. Both require: 1. A compelling story: Whether it’s a cause close to our hearts or a business vision, the story behind the effort motivates and mobilizes support. 2. Commitment and passion: Dedication to the cause or the business is vital. It’s the driving force that keeps us going, even when the journey gets tough. 3. Community and support: Success is never achieved alone. It’s the community’s support, whether it’s fellow cyclists, donors, investors, or customers, that propels us forward. 4. Milestones and goals: Setting clear milestones helps track progress and keeps the momentum alive, be it in fundraising or business development. Riding for the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation reminded me of the impact we can make when we align our efforts with our values. The funds raised will support projects that teach children essential water safety skills, potentially saving lives and empowering communities. Let’s carry the same spirit of dedication and purpose into our professional endeavors. Together, we can drive meaningful progress, whether it’s for a charitable cause or a business venture. Thank you to everyone who supported this event and to those who continuously support our professional and philanthropic journeys. This way, we not only promote team spirit, but also do something for our health at the same time. You’ve never heard from the event before? This is what it’s about: ❓ What? What does it mean to have agency, when you feel scared or powerless? To me, this is the art and power of fundraising, particularly when it comes to challenge events. It’s about so much more than just raising money. 🏃♀️ On Sunday, I took part in the Great North Run for Parkinson's UK. It was an amazing experience on so many levels. My biggest take-away: reaffirming the incredible job charities do in giving people agency to ‘do something’ when faced with some of life's most challenging situations. Being offered this opportunity to take action feels like such an act of kindness. I’ve taken part in lots of charity fundraising events over the years and have always found healing there, especially when moving through sadness or loss. Finding a way to channel those raw emotions into something positive. We were running for my husband’s father, Alastair, who has lived with Parkinson’s for twenty years. It’s such a cruel, debilitating illness and my husband has been on this journey with his Dad all the time we’ve known one another. It was a privilege to put on the Parkinson’s UK t-shirt and run together, alongside other folk going through similar things. There were some extra special ‘you’ve got this!’ moments, bumping into fellow Parkinson’s UK runners along the way. These events create such a mighty sense of community between participants and supporters too. I consider myself an honorary Geordie having lived in Newcastle for several years and the crowd didn’t let us down – fierce, loud and uplifting all the way. I experienced moments of joy and pride, running side-by-side with lots of charities we work with. A sea of charity vests all swimming in the same direction, so many people running in-memory or in-aid of someone they love. 💚 Here’s my gratitude list for the day 💚 💫 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 charity sector. Proud to work alongside you. 💫 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 fundraising. Powerful, potent stuff. 💫 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 professional fundraisers. Donating to Charity is too easy...... according to Matthew Parris writing in the Spectator (April 26) In the context of the London Marathon and online donation platforms, Matthew Parris laments the loss of in person giving and worries that the digital ease of giving and ticking a GiftAid box makes donating to charity too easy and must be costing ‘HM Treasury dearly’. He also muses whether HMRC ever checks up on GiftAid claims. In fact: Research commissioned by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) in January 2024 found that only 55% of donors claimed gift aid when they gave money to charity with as much as £560m a year in gift aid lost to charities. HMRC does conduct gift aid audits and can impose penalties if it is not claimed correctly. Regarding digital platforms, the issue is often BigTech not charities who typically have negligible negotiating powers with Facebook, Amazon and other platforms (Matthew is concerned with the 'voluntary' fee requested by some platforms). The cost of living crisis, collapse of local authorities and the exponential rise in the use of foodbanks means that while public services should be properly funded, charitable donations are needed and that giving should be encouraged. Recent CAF research has also shown that some of the least affluent areas are the most generous. Finally, I did write to the Spectator to correct some of the inaccuracies, particularly around GiftAid. No doubt the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) did as well. It is a shame that no corrections were made by the Spectator. #charities #Fundraising #Giving
