The European Council adopted crucial conclusions on #agriculture yesterday, focusing on the sustainability and competitiveness of our food chain. At EAPF, we support this effort and the ongoing discussions, as the text addresses the vital role of diversifying plant protein sources in the EU to provide solutions to #climate challenges. This aligns with our manifesto, where we urge the EU to focus on rebalancing and diversifying our food system and urge the EU and Member States to put the transition towards a sustainable food system at the heart of the next mandate and come forward with a dedicated #PlantBased food action plan. Transformation of the global food system is such an interesting challenge: it is about power dynamics between actors, about acknowledging societal cost and environmental impact of the current system, about setting just guidelines for regulation, about recognising the formal and informal market dynamics, and about enhancing access to sufficient nutritious food for the growing world population. It is a privilege to be able to contribute to the debate and have a role in defining the content of NFP World Food Day 2023. The event will zoom in on the role of the private sector in this system change. We succeeded to find ten initiatives eager to discuss the various aspects of the role of the private sector in food system transformation and what is needed to make change happen.
