I've never landed a job from applying online. Ever. Here are 5 lessons I learned from 4 job changes: 1. Building connections matter more than writing your resume. 2. Don't run away from a job. Run towards an opportunity. 3. Know exactly how you can bring value to a company/team. 4. Stay organized. 5. Leave on good terms. Just a gal, cheering you on from the sidelines.

Here is a reminder: You have skills and talents. A book I read once suggested that most people have at least 30 skills that can benefit an employer. What are yours? A simple place to start is to sit down and write down all skills you have. If you don't know where to start, search the internet or job search books for top skills employers are looking for, then write down the skills you have from that list. You will pleasantly surprised what you find that you have to offer.

A lot of PhDs get this wrong in their industry job search. To get an industry job, remember: 👉Your value is not based solely on your academic credentials 👉You don't need industry experience to be paid well 👉Your skills aren't limited to research 👉 You don't need to take another class or get another degree 👉 Your academic experience IS work experience 👉 It's not about beating the ATS; it's about applying for jobs where your skills, interests, and values are a fit 👉 Talent recruiters in companies WANT you to get the job 👉 You don't need a portfolio unless it's for a design-related (or sometimes writing) role 👉 Companies use case studies to assess your application of job-relevant skills (the specific content is less relevant). 👉 You're interviewing them as much as they're interviewing you - don't just accept anything 👉 You'll get better results by focusing on 2-3 roles you're passionate about than applying for every open role 🔁Pass it along - repost to help a friend :) _________________________ Are you a PhD struggling to get an industry job? As we approach the off-season, you should be thinking about using your time wisely... If you are looking for a job in sport, this will be a time where you are applying for a lot, as many clubs will be looking to hire for the new season. What you do when you are not applying for jobs is very important... Look at all the jobs adverts, what skills are they requiring? Something that you need to work on? Formulate a plan to be a better analyst/coach/whatever by the time the season comes around whether you get the job you want or not. What I mean by this, is take CPD seriously. Can you learn a new skill? Can you make a few new connections? It's your career, no-one else is going to care about it as much as you. Good luck, and as always, if you need help with CV or cover letter design, I have free resources on my website. You can get there by clicking through my profile.
