Happy to share our recent work on evaluating flexibility values of electric vehicles published in Nature Communications. Flexibility has become increasingly important considering the intermittency of variable renewable energy in low-carbon energy systems. Electrified transportation exhibits great potential to provide flexibility. This article developed a cross-scale energy optimization framework to quantitatively evaluate the comparative advantages of the two pathways of transportation electrification, i.e., battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in terms of their flexibility values under various scenarios influenced by different technologies and energy policies. https://lnkd.in/eu8BYWR5

GKN Automotive signs virtual power purchase agreement • GKN Automotive said it had signed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with global renewable energy developer and subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc., Recurrent Energy. • The 10 year agreement would cover 65% of the supplier's European electricity load and 30% of its global load as part of a commitment to using 50% renewable electricity globally by 2025 and 75% by 2030. • The joint agreement would establish The Rey I project, a new large scale solar farm in Spain which would contribute towards the increased supply of renewable electricity to the Spanish grid. • The project would facilitate the supply of approximately 200,000 MWh of renewable electricity to the European grid annually, reaching approximately 2m MWh over the 10-year agreement. • GKN Automotive would receive Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) equivalent to 65% of its European 2023 electricity usage. • This development is a key step in the company’s SBTi-approved targets to reduce its direct Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 45% by 2030 and achieve net zero across its entire value chain by 2045. • GKN Automotive is planning further VPPAs across Europe and South America. #automotive #supplier #europe

This new report from Sierra Club on how industries with growing energy demand in the US can help accelerate the clean energy transition has important lessons for automakers. According to their analysis, automakers can maximize their impact on the energy grid transition in several key ways. 🏗️As automakers open new plants, as they are currently doing in the US South in response to IRA incentives, they must consider the decarbonization plans of the utilities serving the areas where they intend to operate. 🧽Where they have existing facilities, automakers should actively engage in utility proceedings to demand a clean energy transition and partner with utilities to permanently buy down emissions and maximize demand management capabilities. 💯Automakers can also move past annual volumetric renewable purchases to pursue either 24/7 clean energy or other equally rigorous forms of clean energy and capacity procurement. 📈Automakers can advocate for fair market rules and robust transmission planning and be transparent about their load projections and partner with state policy makers to tighten mandatory renewable portfolio standards (RPS) and clean energy standards (CES), or better, develop a federal CES. Credit article to reNEWS - Renewable Energy News Alight has announced an expanded onsite solar partnership with automotive technology outfit Lear Corporation that will see the Swedish player develop, own, and operate five additional onsite solar assets at Lear locations in Spain, the UK and Poland. The first of the five new solar arrays — a 2.1MW installation at Lear’s Alfreton, UK site — is being commissioned today. This will be followed by four more sites in Spain and Poland, which are scheduled to be operational in 2024. The solar partnership between Alight and Lear began in 2023 when the companies installed a 1MW rooftop array at a Lear facility in Valls, Spain. Upon completion, the six sites are anticipated to generate over 5GWh of electricity annually — enough to power 1000 European households. “Aligned with our renewable energy strategy, commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative and the Paris Agreement, we are working to achieve 100% renewable energy for electric power consumed at our sites by 2030,” said Lear vice president, global sustainability, Jozef Chrzanowski. “Our partnership with Alight and execution of these projects will help support our progress towards our goals, reduce our environmental impact and result in lower electricity costs.” #SolarPartnerShip #Europe #Poland #Spain #UK #QEDGroup #QEDEnergy #PrimeDispute
