The trend of therapists leaving the profession has contributed to a massive hiring challenge for private practice owners. The good news? There are things within our control. This article from The Clinician Transition x Prompt Therapy Solutions Inc offers many useful insights for practice owners to help tackle this challenge. Biggest things that stood out to me: 1 - A lack of professional growth opportunities was the #1 reason therapists are looking to pivot careers. 2 - About 1/4 respondents said they would consider returning to traditional care if they had a leadership role. Therapists are craving the opportunity to climb a ladder. Everybody wants to make progress in life. And when you feel like you’re on a hamster wheel with no upward mobility, you start feeling burnt out- and quite frankly bored. We can do better. This might look like a formal clinical ladder program with a pathway to leadership, or perhaps clinical care combined with other responsibilities such as marketing, operations, or business development. Let’s start listening to today’s talent pool of incredible therapists and what they really want out of their career. Let’s use this information to do better for our therapists and our profession, and in turn, watch your practice thrive. We all deserve it.

What might reverse the trend of PTs leaving traditional patient care roles? We asked clinicians who have recently changed careers or are considering it as part of our survey with The Clinician Transition online community. The question: What could be improved in traditional care? Their answers hit on some common themes: • More opportunities for career advancement/professional growth • Increased compensation and benefits • Greater focus on patients, less on overall productivity • Greater respect for their work, time, and feedback/ideas • A simplified documentation process (and modern tools to streamline it) so they don’t have to finish notes after work We compiled some of the thoughtful answers we received in this slider… To help broadcast their ideas to the rehab therapy community and create productive conversations around how our industry can move forward. If you’ve got ideas you don’t see here, we’d love to hear them. You can also read the full report on why rehab therapists are transitioning out of the field, linked below. Thanks so much to the survey respondents for offering these insights!
