Through our public policy priority addressing access to care and services, we focus on workforce expansion, since there’s a critical shortage of behavioral health providers in the U.S. When accounting for the entire country: 🧠 88% of counties are considered a mental health professional shortage area 🧠 0.05% of counties are considered to have no provider shortage county-wide Put another way, over a third of the U.S. population lives in an area with a shortage of behavioral health professionals, and nearly two-thirds of shortage areas are rural. A new resource from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) addresses the costs and outcomes of providing services for first episode psychosis and strategies for financing the services. "Coordinated Specialty Care for First Episode Psychosis: Costs & Financing Strategies" also covers challenges associated with financing coordinated special care and a summary of approaches to improve funding. That’s 1330 more folks engaging in cultural intentionality! This clinical training program is a critical step forward in mental health. It prioritizes multi-cultural case conceptualization of race, ethnicity, culture, and intersectional identities within suicide prevention. It's unfortunate that many clinical programs don’t train exclusively in suicide prevention and cultural intentionality. However, this training program will help us better serve our minoritized communities in health and wellness. More so, it serves as a reminder that preventing suicide is a public health priority and that immediate action is needed to reduce fatality rates. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) collaborated on establishing World Suicide Prevention Day (WPSD) in 2003. Every year on September 10, organizations, governments, and the general public are encouraged to raise awareness of the issue and focus attention on it with a loud declaration that self-harming can possibly prevented.
