Great initiative being run by our Public Health colleagues, highlighting the alarming increase in VAWG/domestic violence associated with major football tournaments. These facts in particular shocked me... "Domestic abuse increases during tournaments with data from 2022 showing a rise in reported incidents of 26% if England play, 38% if England lose, and 11% the next day, win or lose." The campaign is a good example how our Economic Development team can put other services in touch with like-minded local businesses keen to get involved, generate the required support and buy-in, both during the campaign and by actually being part of the campaign promo itself, and foster positive links. https://lnkd.in/e4ydaERK

What a game. Here's some final whistle stats. Reports of domestic violence during football competitions surge between 25 and 50%. 1 in 4 women will be affected by domestic violence in their lifetimes. There is a clear correlation between domestic abuse and the result of England football matches. When they lose, domestic abuse reports rise by 38%. So good news when they win? No. When England win, it still rises by 26%. Domestic violence reduces during the match itself. It peaks in the 3 hours before and the 3 hours afterwards. There is a clear link with alcohol consumption. Matched that start before 7pm have higher levels of domestic violence compared to later kick-offs. So please be an ally and shout up as being anti-domestic violence. Make your position clear to your friends, colleagues, sons, daughters, fathers and mothers. Research is constantly confirming that children are very aware of domestic abuse taking place in their home and that they are negatively affected by the abuse. Children are often described as 'witnessing' domestic abuse. In reality, it would be more correct to describe them as 'experiencing' the abuse. It is a violence that enters through the eyes and ears. Barnardos Ireland are launching a new campaign which aims to educate and raise awareness of the impact of childhood domestic violence and abuse. It is so important when addressing domestic violence that the voices of children impacted are heard #KidsVsDomesticViolence

Not everyone who calls in sick on Monday will be doing it to hide a hangover. We’ve seen some serious changes in the number of calls to our helpline during major football tournaments. When England was last playing in the Euros back in 2021, we saw a staggering 79% increase in calls and referrals compared to the previous year. We should celebrate this national event, whilst remembering that, whatever the result for England in the Euros final on Sunday, many women, partners and children across the country will be losing. Existing domestic violence sees spikes around national men’s football matches, fuelled by alcohol but caused by the abuser themselves. But how can employers know what to do and how to support staff and colleagues if they come to them and share that they’ve been a victim of abuse?
