As today’s luxury is falling in love with tennis, during the US Open Louis Vuitton has launched its men’s formal collection with Carlos Alcaraz, its new ambassador. Some key points below: 📌 Last week Cesar Val shared his analysis about the evergreen relationship between tennis and luxury and I totally agree with him. There have always been investments in tennis by luxury brands but something is changing. 🎾 As reported by Euromonitor International in 2022, tennis game watchers are 50 yo on average and WTA and ATP are facing a new approach by using social media and new game formats to attract younger generations.  📸 In addition, The Business of Fashion describes the shift on the court: a new cohort of young players is in the spotlight, more diverse and digitally savvy, fully comfortable with their public image as part of the promotional circuit. ⚡️⚡️⚡️Takeaway: fashion has become an important element in a tennis athlete’s image. The name of the Paris 2024 mascot is Olympic Phryge, based on the traditional small Phrygian hats that the mascots are shaped after. The name and design were chosen as symbols of freedom and to represent allegorical figures of the French republic. As Paris 2024’s vision is to demonstrate that sport can change lives, the mascots will be playing a major role by leading a revolution through sport. The Olympic Phryge is decked out in blue, white and red - the colours of France’s famed tricolor flag - with the golden Paris 2024 logo emblazoned across its chest. Phrygian caps can be seen sat atop the head of the iconic figure Marianne in every town hall and even feature on everyday objects in France such as coins and stamps. They are also an international symbol of liberty worn by freed slaves in Roman times and appearing on different emblems in North and South America. Also known as the liberty cap, the Phrygian cap has become one of the symbols of the French Republic. The motto of the Olympic Phryge and Paralympic Phryge is: “Alone we go faster, but together we go further,” representing the ways in which the mascots, and the people of the world, can make each other better by working side-by-side. https://lnkd.in/gUgkVGcF

As the Paralympics start to come on the scene for Paris 2024 we will undoubtedly read and hear many stories focus on the medical or charitable model of disability (see: Inspiration Porn Ted Talk by the great Stella Young). It's our jobs as consumers of these stories to question what is being portrayed. Dr. Danielle Peers writes in their paper, "Interrogating disability: The (de)composition of a recovering Paralympian": 'We, as members of parasport communities, have a choice about what role we wish to play in the (re)production of disability and the disabling cultures that sustain it. We can continue to compose ourselves as those who can overcome (or help others to overcome) biomedical disabilities, or we can participate in the de-composition of stories, cultures and industries that disable. We can continue interrogating and normalizing those whom we understand as having disabilities, or we can begin to interrogate and de-naturalize the story of disability itself.' Channel 4 does a good job to call out the tragedy/inspiration narrative of "she's doing so well, considering" although admittedly it does still have a bit of a supercrip feel. (Unsure if you can really ever get away from this in Paralympic Sport?) As disability-inclusive advertiser, Kelsey Lindell, states, "by using a neutral tone for both the Olympics and Paralympics, you get to demonstrate the 'social model' of viewing disability." I am hopeful that thoughtful media and advertisers will use the Paralympics to start to awaken more of society to the oppression that is reproduced by inspirational/tragic/supercrip narratives rather than reinforce it.

🏅Ever wonder who designs Olympic medals? Interesting backstory on the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic medals right here! Here's the very basics: 📌 Made with the Eiffel Tower: Each medal has a part of the Eiffel Tower in it. This is the first time it's happening, of course! Talk about repurposing! 📌 Design by CHAUMET: A famous jewelry company owned by LVMH, Chaumet, designed the medals. They mixed old and new styles. 📌 What the Medals Look Like: They have a hexagon shape with 18 grams of iron from the Eiffel Tower, made in 1889. 📌 The medals shine like Paris, known as the "City of Light," with rays around the edge. 📌 The Backside of the Medals: Shows the Eiffel Tower. Paralympic medals have a special view of the tower and "Paris 2024" in braille, honoring Louis Braille from France. (Did you know that?!) 📌 Athletes get a piece of French history and the medals celebrate French design and craftsmanship. 🏅LVMH is a major sponsor of the Olympics.
