Earlier this month I had the privilege of speaking at the WILD Network's annual Women’s Global Leadership Forum in Washington, DC alongside U.S. Global Leadership Coalition Board Member Paul Weisenfeld on “How to Make the Case for Global Development.” We had a robust conversation with a group of very committed C-Suite executives in this field and in our network, and I shared some insights that I have learned over the years (sometimes the hard way... but I hope always with grace) when it comes to effective issue advocacy: 1.     We have to make sure we aren’t just talking to ourselves, and push beyond our natural communities. For those of us in DC, we need to take our message “on the road”—i.e. outside of the Beltway. 2.     Skepticism is not a bad thing; it means people are still willing to listen, learn and make decisions or form opinions. Your responsibility is to seize the opportunity and provide the relevant information to make your case. 3.     Your message needs to meet the moment—and the audience. This is especially true when we talk about global development. It requires doing homework to understand what the connections are between your issue and your audience and framing your message within that context. You can’t make your case successfully unless you can make it relevant. 4.     Finally, finding some sort of common ground is almost always possible. Do not let “perfection be the enemy of good.” Be willing to find common points of interest and work from there.
