If you thought Manchester couldn't possibly fit in more cranes, then you're wrong! 🏗️ 2024 is going to be another fantastic year for the city's development projects, as our skyline transformation is showing no signs of slowing down. Projects that are set to be completed this year include: – Co-op Live – First Street – Great Jackson Street – Piccadilly East – Island Offices Not only that, work is set to begin on the following projects: – Mayfield – Viadux – Victoria North – ID Manchester – Oxford Road – Piccadilly Gardens – NOMA – Talbot Mill – Ferrous This level of development in Manchester is unlike anything I have ever seen and it is unlikely that we will see anything like this again in our lifetime. With large-scale events, international organisations and more choosing our city to move to in 2024, it truly feels like Manchester is on the map! Interesting fact - Construction Companies in Manchester collaborated on the 22nd May 2018 on the anniversary of the Manchester Arena attack, paid tribute to the victims by observing the minutes silence and also had all the cranes in the facing the same the arena as a mark of respect.

Pleased to see progress on Nottingham's Broad Marsh area. Back in September 2020 Green Hustle's first festival, all online in the pandemic, hosted (alongside friends at Nottingham Climate Assembly) the first public meeting on re-imagining this opportune former shopping centre site... In an assembly format, we listened to over 60 attendees' hopes and dreams for our city's future. You can watch the whole thing back here: https://lnkd.in/di64e2br Background info was provided by Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust CEO Paul Wilkinson as well as two of our most pioneering and community-minded politicians, then-Deputy Leader and Carbon Neutral Nottingham 2028 champion Sally Longford and the ever-excellent Nadia Whittome MP. Ok it wasn't a terribly balanced panel, but was at a green-themed festival and 10,000 people had at that point already signed a petition calling for it to be made a green space. Early days for me, my very first experience co-designing and facilitating anything like an assembly. We also heard from a seven year old, and the brilliant Lucelia Rodrigues reflecting on what our youngest citizens wanted to see from the space from school engagement. But it was what came from our participants that was the magic, and it helped stimulate the official Big Conversation, playing a part in informing these plans. Jury is out on whether they deliver... Glad to see so many green roofs, more room given over to people and nature, even an actual marsh! And space for celebrating our heritage, which is what Nottingham people called for. (I just hope the Green Heart park doesn't get any smaller) The new NHS diagnostic centre and re-use of the broadly unloved old Broadmarsh centre's rather brutal frame is also, I think, fantastic. People power! 🏹 💚 EDITS - some good people have contradicted my initially rosey assessment, and I admit it isn't perfect. I have rebalanced a bit. I don't think we're ever all going to be totally happy AND it be viable for developers. Maybe a medium is being found here. I hope it is at least as green as the picture paints... Let's remember many people also find the idea of it being a big green space ridiculous and impractical, though I would love that too! I am proud of what we did in growing the conversation and demanding real engagement.

Today #Rotherham town centre’s first cinema in more than 30 years has opened. It’s a big vote of confidence in the fact that people still want the shared experience of enjoying a film together. Despite an accelerated rise in streaming services since the pandemic and the cost-of-living-crisis, the appeal of social spaces providing affordable entertainment seems as great now as it was when the ‘picture palaces’ of a century ago lit up our towns and cities. At that time, it was a new experience to watch films from around the world, to see different perspectives and stories beyond our own backyard. The novelty might have worn off but the enjoyment of coming together to enjoy cultural experiences is as strong as ever. It’s also huge cause for celebration in a town where recent national media headlines have been dominated by division. One page in a new chapter for Rotherham which has seen £47million investment in Forge Island, a new, much-needed family-friendly part of the town, where boutique cinema operator, The Arc is located. The history of Forge Island was new to me before we began working alongside ace placemakers Muse and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, development partners of the site which originated in the 19th century as a steel forge. Who knew (not me!) that the world-famous Bailey Bridge came from Rotherham? Used extensively in civil engineering construction projects across the world, the portable, steel truss bridge was designed and developed by Rotherham-born civil engineer, Donald Bailey and was used by the military throughout Europe during the Second World War. FaulknerBrowns have incorporated the diamond truss steel design that is synonymous with Bailey Bridges into the new bridge at Forge Island, in celebration of Rotherham’s incredible engineering heritage, at the same time as creating a contemporary permanent gateway structure for the town. Opening a new cinema is a joyful thing in itself. But when you visit Forge Island, with beautiful landscape design by re-form Landscape Architecture Ltd, you can feel the history of the whole place literally underfoot and that’s a film location that future movie-makers’ dreams are made of. #Placemaking #Regeneration #Yorkshire #ArcCinemas

While some councillors called the proposal "bonkers" the developers see it as a potential way to revitalise an unused site. This situation raises interesting questions about balancing modern development with preserving historic character in our cities. Can modern high-rise development coexist with historic buildings?
