Tech-Ed for Good is a series of videos created by lecturers throughout the Faculty of Computing, Digital and Data, TU Dublin that showcases how the work undertaken in the Faculty has a positive influence on society, the environment, our communities, and that helps to shape the positive use of digital technology. Much of the work showcased in Tech-Ed for Good aligns with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including: SDG 3: Good Health & Well-Being, SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 5: Gender Equality, and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. It’s been a disheartening start to the year for #dei work. A few scary setbacks: ➡️DEI has become a politicized term, distracting from the true intention of the work. ➡️Organizations are quieting or shutting down their DEI resolutions after last year’s affirmative action ruling. ➡️The value of having diverse mindsets at the table continues to be questioned by prominent voices (last week, by Elon Musk and Lululemon founder Chip Wilson). Now is not the time to shy away from this work. Yes, it’s more challenging and uncomfortable than ever— but leaders need to lean in, not out. Census statistics predict that people of color will make up the majority of the U.S. population by 2045. The lead-up to that date should be spent ensuring that resources— from VC funding to education to job opportunities— are distributed equitably across our population. This data also underscores the importance of brands creating products by and for people of color, to ensure they’re meeting the needs of a diverse user base. Code2040, a pro-bono client we worked with a few years ago as part of Mission North ’s E3thos program, is doing important work toward this goal. 7 things I’ve learned from managing 14 INCREDIBLE women in tech👩💻 Obose/Imaan: An initial no can turn into a yes not by luck, but by work ethic and visibility. These ladies are proof of that! Regina/Emma : Leadership is not just a title. It’s a conscious action that you take and effort that you continue to make without prompting. Imisi/Sayonee: Grassroots initiatives can be difficult but not impossible. Reaching members in ‘difficult areas’ proves an impressive level of resilience, determination and passion. Batul/Stephanie: First impressions matter and the way you present yourself during an interview can genuinely be the thing that gives you an edge over other candidates. Abigail/Sharon: Don’t look down on yourself or others because of age! You can position yourself uniquely; learning from those who have more experience whilst offering a new perspective. Precious/Arin: Bring what you know, use what you have. We all came from somewhere and have a specific skillset, impact looks like giving back using what you have and know now. Stephanie/Millennia: In a world full of pretense, honesty is refreshing. Working in front of a computer all day isn’t all bad when you know you’re working with genuine, and authentic people. Each person has had a unique perspective to bring and a unique way of expressing it. Together these Rewriting the Code UK Ambassadors have exceeded the UK membership growth target by 39% in LESS than 6 months!!

Calling All Companies: Let's Stop Exploiting Free Tech Talent Pipelines 💸 Like many women in the tech community I am saddened by the news of Women Who Code closing. They paved the way for a wave of amazing coding programs focused on women and underrepresented groups. The Shocking Truth: Yet, these non-profits shouldn't shoulder the ENTIRE burden of training, supporting, and placing talent. Companies benefit hugely from these programs, building diverse, skilled workforces – FOR FREE. The Broken Model: For 7 years, I've seen companies expect a free ride – reaping the benefits of diverse, highly-skilled talent without investing in training, building inclusive workplaces, or even paying recruitment fees to these incredible organisations (while happily paying referral bonuses for internal hires!).They don't pay to build the talent pool they poach from. But There's Hope: I've also seen incredible companies who GET IT. They live their commitment to diversity and inclusion. And they understand their responsibility to financially invest in future talent. ✨ Here's How We Change It: I've had the pleasure of working with Bethan Richmond at Capgemini, a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) guru. Want to learn how to engage your entire company in CSR through community partnerships? Talk to her! For those interested in empowering your own employees to create learning opportunities, PwC is another fantastic example. Speak with Hamed Amiri and Kim Whippy to gain insight and inspiration. Let's move beyond empty gestures. Let's build a tech industry where the responsibility is shared. As Bob Dylan said "For the times they are a-changin" As we face into a volatile and uncertain economic vista with the Doomsday Clock rigidly stuck at 90-seconds to midnight, it is worth reflecting on this question. Are our c-suites focusing more on financial fundamentals and questioning #dei investments? In Ireland we already had a significant backlash at a tech unicorn who tried to dial back on DEI initiatives but subsequently earned significant public vitriol for the dial-down. Any thoughts? DEI in Tech: Too Little, Too Late? SXSW In the past year, several prominent tech initiatives aimed at promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have closed their doors, raising urgent questions about the efficacy of DEI efforts in the tech industry. Are these initiatives truly delivering meaningful change, or are they merely ticking boxes without addressing systemic issues...?
