I watched a documentary about the fast fashion brand Brandy Melville the other day. It was fascinating. I knew fast fashion was harmful, but I had no idea to what extent! The documentary was mostly about how evil the company is in general - racist, sexist, and exploitative. But, beyond that, fast fashion's impact on the environment is truly frightening. The documentary showed several clips of the oceans in Ghana - the country that most western nations choose to exploit. They force them to buy our discarded cheap junk-clothes, which they then have to figure out how to dispose of. A lot of it ends up in the oceans. Western nations don't care because it's not "their" beach that looks like a landfill. But the ignorant thing, of course, is that there is no "their" beach. The quality of the world's oceans affects OUR marine life and the climate of the whole world, not just a portion of it. The most important take-away for me is that what we purchase is a moral decision. It is as important as voting - maybe more so. The shenanigans of corporations affect our daily lives more directly than the convoluted inefficiencies of the government. Also, the two are linked. Corporate leaders buy the politicians with their contributions. Therefore, immoral corporations lead to immoral governments. Regular people have the numbers, but the corporations have the money. Money is the only language spoken by the powers that be. But we can use our collective numbers to counter this - as long as we resist laziness and apathy. It is easy to get overwhelmed, and feel like there's nothing we can do about the world's problems. But there is something we can do. Every time we shop, we can shop with our conscience. Support high-quality small businesses, local artisans, and ethical corporations. Withdraw your support, as much as possible, from the rest. As we embark into the 4th year of being in the sustainable fashion business, my heart fills with gratitude and looking at how far we’ve come as a brand. But let me also tell you the reality without sugar coating and saying we are a huge success. Firstly, for anyone who envies an entrepreneur’s life let me tell you have got it all wrong. I am not trying to make it a corporate vs entrepreneur debate. Just putting it out there that you need patience like the Earth, grit like Fire, persistent perseverance like the waves and just discipline from the Gods. It takes immense courage to put that trust in yourself when no one else does and to go ahead with an idea that does not enough “data”, to back up your gut feeling. It goes without saying that every dream needs to be backed up with startegy and data and all of that. But Anyà was my Passion Project to put it very bluntly. I started this brand in my grandmother’s tiny house with 20,000/- rupees outsourcing everything, with two racks that I lugged around Crawford market because I didn’t have extra to pay the cart-man. That was my first big but tiny victory as silly as that may sound to you. As a sustainable entrepreneur I think I have been everything that I could possibly be for this brand, from the studio cleaner to the CEO; just like a baby demands its mother to. I think so far I have done a decent job and of course tones of mistakes to learn from. Just like many other sustainable home grown brand the brand is reaching a point of swim or sink; a point of should I say goodbye or should I give it my all in the last push. If there is one important thing that I have learnt in these 3 years is that no one knows what they are doing. Not the biggest Ninjas in their secure well paid jobs nor a bunch of us who think that our brand will change the world in some way. But what we must absolutely NOT do is GIVE UP. Listen to that gut, it may not make sense to anyone but if that tiny voice in there says one last time; just try. DO IT. Give it your all, give it your best. So on that note, with a brave heart I am going to say, Happy 4 to us!! May we give it our all and have a great come back for the 5th. - Nitya Chandrasekhar

Do you know the simple way to figure out how sustainable a fashion brand is? 👖 I just found the thing I've been missing all this time. Good On You researches and ranks all the leading brands according to their practices around People, Planet and Animals. It's a simple, informative, and incredibly helpful app and website. 🧐 Type in a brand and you'll get a ranking and details of the brand's policies that contribute to it. And you'll get recommendations for more ethical alternatives, as well as an easy way to give a brand props (or write to them to express your disappointment). 💌 You might say it's been around for ages. They have 200k+ Instagram followers. But it's new to me! And I hope this helps someone else find it too. 👋 And how are the brands doing? Well, if I tell you they've ranked over 5000 and less than 1% have scored 4/5 or higher, you get the picture. (No more A.P.C. for me - they get a shocking write up...). 🫤 Responsible fashion is about much more than buying more ethical new clothes of course. It's about clothing care, share & repair, pre-loved and much more. And it's about government supporting new production and end of life practices. 🩳 But the brands have a huge, huge part to play. Good On You feels like exactly what's needed to start getting the conversation about their practices out in the open, and to celebrate the ones making progress and doing well. 👏 (No disclaimer needed btw: I have nothing to do with them through Hubbub. Just a fan!). ++ P.S. I'm Alex Robinson, CEO of environmental charity Hubbub. We bring business, government and civil society together to create campaigns that make it easier and more possible for all of us to make choices that are good for the environment. Follow me to find out how, or get in touch for more. #sustainablefashion #environment #fashion

Small business spotlight: @tenthmuse Sustainable, conscious & innovative perfectly describes everything that TenthMuse stands for. After noticing a gap in the market for a perfume that prioritises the health of your skin and the environment, Tenth Muse's founder, Sophie began working hard on a sustainable line of solid perfumes. With 4 unique fragrances to choose from TenthMuse quickly became a popular staple for perfumes that stand out! 🌎 I thought I'd do a little bit of retail therapy and actually bought the scent 'Italian Summer' from TenthMuse, and it's safe to say that it has literally become my go-to. The handy compact is the perfect size to fit into any purse, not to mention that it is also travel friendly! If you're looking for a small business to support this spring, why not become a muse and check them out! #marketinggirl #smallbuisinessspotlight #communitybuilding #socialmediaexecutive

Changing the way businesses think about sustainability through community & practical brand building | Business Mentor - get Conscious + Content in your business | Mother of 2 | Former Fashion Stylist
I'm not sure what you know me for on here. I post about a lot of things; being a female founder, running a business, sustainability etc, but I don't often post myself about sustainable fashion. Which is weird because its really my happy place. Having worked in fashion media for almost 10 years, then pivoting to work with sustainable business, I actually know a thing or two about it. It's why I started The WIP and how I began growing a community of like minded, small, sustainable business owners and entrepreneurs. So I'm going to start posting a bit more about sustainable fashion here too. My thinking is, if I'm interested in it, and you're interested in me, it may land? Stay tuned for some wisdom, musings and insight. #sustainablefashion #femalefounder #founderjourney

FRSA | Co-founder/CEO at LOANHOOD | Circular Fashion | Events | Mentor | Purpose Driven |Ebay Circular Fashion Fund
I read this post over the weekend... Independent Brands Matter - And why it’s important they thrive by Dan Mackie My highlights When we talk about the fashion industry, the most successful brands retain value largely through brand marketing efforts and sell mass-produced items at very high margins 📈 Independent brands operate competitively. They innovate and are creative. Stifling competition 👉 Reinvigorating competition Because of the power of mega brands, smaller brands struggle to compete. Consumers suffer because innovation disappears when there’s no competition. And for clothing lovers, that means fewer exciting designs and material innovation, whilst paying more for lower quality. Lack of wealth 👉 Wealth generation When large corporations dominate, the huge profits we make for them is passed into just a few pockets. In the end, this is bad for 99% of people. Independent brands tend to pay their employees properly and create wealth all the way through their supply chain. This means my money is being distributed to many people, helping them prosper. Minimum ethics 👉 Promoting ethics When a corporation has a single focus on profit, they have minimal ethics. They use supply chains with low employment rights to match their low cost and maximum profit for the corporate brand. The cheapest and most ecologically damaging industrial practices are used in the production of materials. Independent brands are conscious of their ethics. They have a relationship with their customers, and they both recognise this as added value. Dan goes on to say "when buying products from independent brands, I know that my money is going into more people’s pockets — distributing wealth more broadly. And for me, more fairly to the people who work with dedication, creativity and passion to produce the clothes I buy." 🛍 And this is why at LOANHOOD we support the discovery and rental of incredible independent fashion brands. #independfashion #circularfashion #sustainableclothing #fashionrental https://lnkd.in/ex2R7sVR

Dear Fashion Professionals, Stop confusing a social enterprise or charity with an ethical business. As a fashion lawyer, i have noticed that a lot of Sustainable fashion brands often inquire about the most suitable legal structure for their operations, as they prioritize ethical practices in their business model. While sustainability and ethical fashion may give the impression of NGOs or social enterprises, these entities are fundamentally businesses that have chosen to conduct their operations in a socially responsible, environmentally sustainable, and stakeholder-respectful manner. In general, ethical fashion businesses aim to increase profits while adhering to ethical standards. While both social enterprises and charities focus on creating positive social or environmental impact, ethical businesses prioritize ethical practices throughout their operations, including sourcing, production, and distribution. Although all social enterprises can be considered ethical businesses due to their commitment to social impact, not all ethical businesses are social enterprises. Sustainable fashion brands have the flexibility to register under various legal structures, similar to any other business entity. They can choose from options such as a business name, partnership, limited liability company, or even a non-governmental organization (NGO), depending on their goals, mission, and priorities. I hope this helps. Happy New Week! #fashionlaw #fashionlawyer #sustainability #ethicalfashionbrands
