🔋 Challenge of Solid-State Lithium Batteries That Even the Biggest Manufacturers Haven't Overcome Solid-state electrolytes offer significant theoretical advantages over current batteries: - 🚗 Higher Energy Density: Up to 50% more range with the same volume or the same range with smaller and lighter batteries. - ⚡ Faster Charging: More powerful fast charges. - 📉 Potential Cost Reduction: Greater stability and potential for cheaper production in the long run. However, despite a decade of research and development, creating a commercially viable solid-state battery for mass production remains elusive. Key Challenges: - 🧪 New Chemistry Needed: Viability hinges on using pure metallic lithium for the anode, which presents its own set of challenges. - 🌡️ Swelling During Recharges: Solid-state batteries experience swelling due to the accumulation of solid lithium material on electrode surfaces during charging, increasing the battery's volume. - 🔄 Limited Charge Cycles: Current iterations can only last about 10 cycles, disqualifying them from commercial use. Manufacturers like Toyota Motor Corporation are investing heavily in solid-state technology, aiming to have the first commercially viable solid-state battery ready by 2028. I did not go to Harvard. And I am not smart enough to disagree about anything with a Harvard Professor (I would assume). But I think the solution is a solution to a problem the government policies are forcing us to solve and that shouldn’t be the case. Because no matter the solution, it cannot require gas or diesel. And if policy makers were really concerned about emissions, above all else, forcing us to do this is a silly way to achieve the ultimate goal. I THINK (remember didn’t go to Harvard, not super smart) a small Cummins 2.8 mated to a generator/stator, and 50kw/h-ish of batteries is a far lighter, much more simple solution. If trucks fully loaded are in the 1.6 to 2kw/h range of energy per mile. You can set generator to keep minimum 50% of battery charge. That’ll be your extra power reserve for inclines. The diesel engine (160hp) can provide can probably do 110ish kw on electrical generation after inefficiencies. That with the battery pack and some route preplanning is more than enough power to get you up long and steep inclines. Honestly seems like not that hard of a problem to solve but facts are not important these days. Being “green” is all that’s important and it’s more important than anything practical, cost effective, or even based with common sense. Look at regular commuter cars. We went from gas to hybrids, a little interim of plug in hybrids and that’s still overlapping, to full electric. Do the same with trucks. Make small deisel engine HYBRIDS, give the industry time to grow its battery production and get better at engineering the power trains. Give it time. Then Transition to diesel electric plug in hybrid. Give it time. And then by then the industry and infrastructure should actually ready for electric trucks and have battery production at scale. And have well engineered electric powertrains. Again, we’ve done this already to an extent.

Solid-state batteries may not experience widespread adoption, as some studies might suggest. It typically takes several decades for a technology to mature before becoming commercially available. In the case of large applications such as electric vehicles (EVs), the initial generation of batteries featuring existing Carbon/Silicon on the anode side is expected to be more readily deployable in the short to medium term compared to full solid-state batteries with Lithium on the anode side. Additionally, initial deployments will likely occur first in Asia, particularly with companies well-advanced in China, such as CATL, ProLogium, WeLion, etc. For the automotive industry, initial deployments of solid-state batteries will primarily be reserved for high-premium cars with limited production series. BMW Group receives first solid-state cells Solid Power wants to build a cell with a gravimetric energy density of 390 Wh/kg. If a lithium-metal anode is installed instead of the silicon anode, the cell (still with NCM-811 cathode) achieves an energy density of 440 Wh/kg. https://lnkd.in/d7PdRwGN
