Yet, despite facing some of the most significant challenges, the voices of Northern Ghanaians have been underrepresented in policy discussions and climate conferences, typically held in the Southern region, in big cities like Accra, where the impacts are less visible. But guess what? #Change is brewing, and it's coming straight from the heart of Tamale in Northern Ghana!🌟 Why #Tamale, you ask? Because it's high time we shine the #spotlight on those who need it most. Northern Ghana is at the front line of #climate change, facing challenges like erratic rainfall and diminishing agricultural yields. It's about time we give these communities the platform they deserve to share their stories, insights, and solutions. Despite Africa’s very little contribution (3%) to carbon emissions and the vastness of her carbon sinks, she bears the largest impact of climate change🌍. Indigenous communities, including pastoralist communities, are worst hit with prolonged periods of severe droughts affecting their sole source of livelihood. Through our mentorship program, we are making accessible education on climate change and its impacts, tailored to the specific needs and realities of pastoralist communities. We are empowering our young change champions to initiate and lead climate-related projects and climate-resilient practices within their communities such as tree planting, water conservation and sustainable agriculture and livestock management. As an environmentalist, I find this approach not only noble but also incredibly sustainable. Imagine if every country adopted a similar practice as part of our journey towards achieving net zero emissions. From Morocco's Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex, one of the world’s largest solar farms, to South Africa's significant investment in wind and solar power, renewable energy is a cornerstone of Africa's climate strategy. Sustainable Agriculture and Reforestation Countries like Kenya and Ethiopia are revolutionizing agricultural practices by integrating climate-smart agriculture that reduces emissions and enhances resilience to climate variability. Simultaneously, reforestation projects like Ethiopia's Green Legacy Initiative, which aims to plant billions of trees, are crucial in sequestering carbon. #WorldEnvironmentDay2024 Today I join United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) in celebrating World Environment Day 2024. This special day is being celebrated under the theme “Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. It comes at a time when Zambia is experiencing one of the worst droughts in decades, occasioned by climate change. Drought has implications on the environment as it distabilses ecosystems and promotes deforestation. Additionally, it has significant negative impacts on hydropower generation as can be seen from 12 hours load shedding which is currently being implemented by Zambia’s national power utility, ZESCO, owing to low water levels in the Kariba Dam. By celebrating this day, nations are drown to the importance of implementing sustainable practices and curating resilience in business operations and in rolling out the national development agenda. The summit, brought together leaders, policymakers, scientists, and activists from across Africa and beyond to discuss and strategize on climate action. Key highlights of the summit included: ✅ Climate Commitments: African nations reaffirmed their commitment to the #parisagreement and discussed their individual and collective efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change. ✅ Adaptation and Resilience: Given Africa's vulnerability to climate change, there was a strong focus on strategies to enhance the resilience of communities and ecosystems. Discussions covered topics such as sustainable agriculture, water resource management, and disaster preparedness. ✅ Renewable Energy: The summit emphasized the importance of renewable energy sources in mitigating climate change and promoting energy access in Africa. As we gear up to UNEA-6 being held at The UNEP HQs at Gigiri, Nairobi on 26th February to 1st March 2024. There is one resolve; that the tripple planetary crisis ie biodiversity loss, climate change and pollution is more evident in this 21st century. From the extended flooding and drought phenomena to the heat waves and constant rising of the sea level, they evidently show how nature us unforgiving Human life is besiged by severe calamities of  poverty ,hunger, diseases crisis as well as loss of property due to frequent flash floods.  It's time to work for the environment, and it will work for us. If we destroy nature, nature will definitely destroy us. UNEA(United Nations Environmental Assembly) being the highest decision making body of UNEP, composed of all the 193 countries that are UN member states , will be converging in Nairobi for the UNEA-6.
