At the Munich Security Conference, tech companies decided to take a vital step forward to secure elections. Standing together, 20 companies including Microsoft announced a new Tech Accord to Combat Deceptive Use of AI in 2024 Elections. Its goal is straightforward but critical – to combat video, audio, and images that fake or alter the appearance, voice, or actions of political candidates, election officials, and other key stakeholders. It is not a partisan initiative or designed to discourage free expression. It aims instead to ensure that voters retain the right to choose who governs them, free of this new type of AI-based manipulation. This new cross-industry Accord will pursue three objectives : ➡️ First, the accord’s commitments will make it more difficult for bad actors to use legitimate tools to create deepfakes. ➡️ Second, the accord brings the tech sector together to detect and respond to deepfakes in elections. ➡️ Third, the accord will help advance transparency and build societal resilience to deepfakes in elections. A positive move by Microsoft and other major tech companies to work together on developing tools to detect and prevent misleading AI content from influencing public opinion during election campaigns. But as this is a voluntary accord and no timescale has been announced for meeting this commitment, how effective this will be ahead of upcoming elections this year remains to be seen. https://lnkd.in/eJ8E76H9 #ai #artificialintelligence #deepfakes

The recent elections in Indonesia, held on February 14th, have brought to light the incredible opportunities that Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds for transforming political campaigns. The way digital strategies were deployed, especially for Prabowo Subianto, showcases a fascinating application of generative AI, creating a more approachable image of the candidate. This included the creation of a "gemoy" (meaning cute and cuddly) avatar on social media, which particularly resonated with young voters. Additionally, there was a significant incident where a deepfake video showed the former dictator Suharto (who died in 2008) endorsing Prabowo Subianto's political party, Golkar. This incident highlights the powerful role AI can play in shaping political narratives and influencing election outcomes. Against this backdrop, a major announcement today has caught everyone's attention: leading technology companies have signed an agreement to fight AI-generated misinformation in elections. As detailed by ABC News, this initiative marks a critical step towards tackling the spread of false information and maintaining the integrity of democratic processes. It represents a collective effort to confront the challenges presented by the misuse of AI in spreading misinformation and swaying public opinion. The commitment to this accord brings crucial questions about our ability to manage the use of AI and prevent its misuse in undermining democratic values. As we move forward into this new chapter, it prompts us to consider whether these efforts will be enough to harness AI's potential to make our democracies more inclusive and strengthen them globally. The balance between leveraging AI's advantages and protecting the core values of our democratic societies is a complex challenge, urging us to contemplate the future of democracy in an era increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence.
