SET UP TO FAIL... ...is how I often view #youngworkers. 🤜 Recently, we advised a client on a potential #workplace bullying issue involving a handful of apprentices. ⚠ Whilst we acknowledged that such allegations should be taken seriously, we also pointed out that those concerned were fresh out of full-time #education and probably lacking in experience when it came to knowledge of what’s acceptable and what’s not in the #workplace. 😬 Although pranks played on a fellow student could have resulted in a complaint of bullying in an educational context and possibly even expulsion in some cases, the potential consequences are more grave when the same behaviours take place at work. 👨⚖️ They risk significant #legal and financial exposure to both the employer and the employee and therefore, termination of #employment is a very real possibility despite mitigating factors such as youth and inexperience being likely considerations. 👎 The knock-on effects of dismissal in such circumstances can be disastrous for #youngpeople as far as their financial stability and future #employmentprospects are concerned. Of course, it’s not just areas such as the distinction between horseplay, high jinks, #banter, bullying, #harassment and #discrimination that young people need education in. Induction programmes will give a general heads up on what’s in store and #HRpolicies contained in staff handbooks provide some written guidance and reference material regarding expectations in key areas. However, so much of how employees are expected to conduct themselves in the workplace is implied. Businesses tend to take it for granted that their employees will know to use manners, will understand #officeetiquette, will appreciate the need to check instructions and will be aware of suspected wrongdoing that needs reporting. 👀 However, in order to get the best out of young people entering the workplace, we believe it’s vital to open their eyes to the realities involved in the transition from full-time education to employment. 🌟 To this end, we’ve developed a #training course entitled “Entering the World of Work”. The programme is designed to be delivered to school / university leavers and new #apprentices as part of the workplace #induction process. Research shows that approximately 35% of apprentices go on to run their own business. Getting young people into work. The Reed Agency research found that the proportion of 16-year-olds on apprenticeships had dropped from 7.8 per cent in 1999 to 2.8 per cent in 2022. Since 2015, the number of entry-level apprenticeships for under-19s had fallen by 38 per cent to 77,510 in 2022-23. For those aged 19 to 24 the numbers were also down 38 per cent. https://lnkd.in/eXat_fzn

Why is talking about class still so important? Because many of the middle class incorrectly perceive it to be less of an issue than it actually is. This (open access) article is significant because it shows, quantifiably, the disparity between the working and middle class in their perception of conflict between social factions, through analysis of data from the International Social Survey Programme. It uses data collected on 25 countries (19 of which were measured in both iterations) in 1999 and 2009. Overall, perceptions of class conflict are higher amongst the working class. They’ve categorised the same people into objective class (class categorisation by labour relations) and ‘subjective class’ – what social class the survey responders have chosen to categorise themselves as. For many of the middle class - and certainly amongst those that I know, this habit of downplaying class conflict stems from their lack of understanding of what it is like to be working class. But this isn't owing to hostility in any way, it just means that we need to talk about it more than we currently do. The working class perceive (and indeed, experience) everyday life in a wholly different manner to that of the middle class. Only through creating spaces for constructive dialogue between parties will we be able to address issues as and when they arise.
