Richmond Events Switzerland’s Post

Why is leadership development important in a changeable market? 🔎 Andrew Bryant, CSP “Imagine being on a plane, it suddenly drops, oxygen masks fall, and smoke swirls around your ankles. The captain steps out and says, “Ladies and Gentleman, we have a problem; let’s form groups and brainstorm solutions.” Would you consider this good leadership? On LinkedIn and other social platforms, you often see statements like "Leadership is X" or "Leaders do Y." But this oversimplification overlooks that effective leadership depends on the environment. Consider three elements of the leadership equation: the leader’s style, the follower’s motivation and capability, and the stability of the environment. In my airplane example, the environment was unstable, and despite the passengers' motivation, they lacked the capability to fly the plane. Therefore, the leader’s style needed to be directive, not participative. Leaders need self-awareness of their leadership style and the ability to adjust it depending on the environment and their stakeholders. This is why leadership development, particularly self-leadership, is crucial in a changing market. Everyone agrees leadership development is important, but not everyone recognizes their own need for it.” With this being said, the anticipation for his keynote at the Richmond PIMS Forum is high and we can’t wait to hear more!
