Today, we pause and reflect on #Juneteenth, the anniversary of the day when the last enslaved people in the United States were set free. As we reflect on the significance of this day, we also celebrate the College's mission to create men who think critically, act responsibly, lead effectively, and live humanely. It is these attributes that contribute to a better future. A future in which race and/or ethnicity is not a predictor of achieving one’s full potential. And, it is these attributes that we instill in our men to go forth and pave a more mindful future. Let this day grow into long-term, significant change in which we all celebrate belonging, justice and a common mission, to live humanely.

#InclusiveInnovation Core Tenet #1: Collective Ownership Shifting the R&D process to a model of co-leadership, co-research, and co-design centers those that are most impacted—students, parents, and communities. Here’s what that looks like in action: ⬇️ In a 3-district #InclusiveInnovation collaboration to recruit and retain  teachers of color in Pennsylvania, the districts established a shared commitment to co-leadership. Throughout the process, the voices of teachers of color were centered. As a result, teachers of color were supported in taking the helm of the R&D process. Together, the collaborative created a regional network of teachers of color to build community and address the sense of isolation that teachers of color experience—a shared vision that reflected the ideas and needs of all those involved. Reading and reflecting on, "America's Crisis of Civic Virtue," by Arthur Brooks. In it, Brooks argues that both democracy and capitalism are threatened by declining civility, honesty, and trust in American society, rather than capitalism itself being a threat to democracy. To address this, he recommends reviving civic virtue through strengthening civil society institutions, such as community organizations, schools, and national service programs. Universities should recommit to free speech and avoid taking sides on contentious issues. The private sector should be subject to stronger regulatory enforcement to prevent market failures. Leaders in business, media, and education should refrain from engaging in the culture war, as taking sides on divisive issues foments mistrust and contempt. Ultimately, individual citizens can contribute to renewal by avoiding polarizing influences, supporting unifying politicians, engaging in community efforts, and forming friendships across ideological lines. https://lnkd.in/e_MB8U-Z

ICYMI: Yoshua Simms, an early childhood education major at Cincinnati State and a Leading Men Fellow with The Literacy Lab wrote an op-ed for the Enquirer - Cincinnati and Kentucky highlighting the importance of representation in education and how it can empower young learners. Here's a powerful quote from Yoshua's piece: "We can’t shy away from this problem. In fact, we need to lean into it to come up with real solutions to help recruit more Black and brown males into the teaching profession. Those solutions should include collaborations with community organizations, educators, policymakers, colleges and universities and other institutions. The racial makeup of classrooms won’t change without a collaborative strategy. I’m excited to share the culmination of hard work and collaboration by the EdAllies Community Action Team (CAT) cohort, which I had the privilege of facilitating and for which I authored the final report. The EdAllies team, along with each member of this cohort, is an inspiring, unwavering leader in their commitment to addressing the severe disparities in Minnesota’s K-12 systems. 📊 Despite students of color and indigenous students comprising about 38% of Minnesota’s K-12 population, teachers of color and indigenous teachers represent only about 6% of the workforce. This gap has significant implications, particularly for Black students. Research shows that having even one Black teacher between kindergarten and 3rd grade increases a student's likelihood of graduating high school and enrolling in college by over 13%; with two Black teachers, this likelihood rises to 32%. However, Black teachers currently make up only 1.5% of the teaching corps in MN. 🚀 In 2023, EdAllies convened a CAT cohort to examine the barriers preventing would-be teachers of color from entering and thriving in the workforce. Over nearly six months, the cohort: ▶ Shared and heard stories about the teacher pipeline to identify trends and problem areas, ▶ Analyzed state and national data to understand these trends, and ▶ Developed community-led policy recommendations to improve recruitment and retention of Black teachers. 📑 The resulting report is a testament to a collective, community effort and a tool to influence local and state policy. The main conclusion: many barriers in Minnesota’s teacher preparation systems are structural and long-standing. Therefore, we must re-vision these systems from the ground up, centering the needs of teachers of color. Further, we seek to foster environments of connectedness and belonging - where students, families, educators, and leaders are able to build meaningful and trusting relationships.
