Clearly the size of SMRs can only be increased so far before the benefits of smaller size are lost and the SMR concept becomes meaningless. The other path that proponents of SMRs have suggested for reducing costs might be termed economies of mass installation. The idea is that once dozens of a single design have been built and installed, a combination of learning by doing and savings through the mass production of standardized reactor modules from factories will drive down costs to competitive levels. The economies of mass installations would be enhanced through international harmonization of the rules and regulations for building and operating an SMR. Xendee is excited to announce the successful completion of the first phase of our collaboration with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) focused on Small Modular Reactor (SMR) modeling. Through our partnership, we've made remarkable strides in advancing the integration of SMRs into campus microgrids. Our modeling revealed that replacing the existing natural gas/coal-fired district heating plant with an optimally designed SMR system could reduce carbon emissions by up to 85%. This underscores the potential of SMRs in driving sustainability and resilience in energy systems. TANDEM holds Industrial Users Group meeting   On 5 April 2024, TANDEM convened a meeting in Brussels’ at the Tractebel headquarters (Belgium) with the 13 members of its Industrial Users Group (IUG) to provide them with an update on the project and to obtain their feedback.   During the meeting, the coordinators of two parent Euratom Projects related to #nuclear and the #cleanenergy transition, namely GEMINI 4.0 and NPHyCo Project, were invited to provide an overview of these projects and to highlight synergies between these projects and TANDEM.
