On this day in history 02/25/24. In 1870 Hiram R. Revels is sworn in as the 1st African American member of Congress as US Senator from Mississippi. Hiram Rhodes Revels (September 27, 1827– January 16, 1901) was an American Republican politician, minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and a college administrator. Born free in North Carolina, he later lived and worked in Ohio, where he voted before the Civil War. Elected by the Mississippi legislature to the United States Senate as a Republican to represent Mississippi in 1870 and 1871 during the Reconstruction era, he was the first African American to serve in either house of the U.S. Congress. During the American Civil War, Revels had helped organize two regiments of the United States Colored Troops and served as a chaplain. After serving in the Senate, Revels was appointed as the first president of Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Alcorn State University), a historically black college. He served from 1871 to 1873. Later in his life, he served again as a minister. Revels advocated compromise and moderation. He vigorously supported racial equality and worked to reassure his fellow senators about the capability of African Americans. He served on both the Committee of Education and Labor and the Committee on the District of Columbia. Much of the Senate’s attention focused on Reconstruction issues. While Radical Republicans called for continued punishment of ex-Confederates, Revels argued for amnesty and a restoration of full citizenship provided they swore an oath of loyalty to the United States. The Significance of Juneteenth On June Nineteenth, we celebrate a pivotal moment in history—Juneteenth—when the chains of slavery were broken, marking the beginning of a new era of hope and unity for all, both former slaves and free citizens. The end of slavery did more than liberate those who were directly oppressed; it laid the foundation for universal freedom and justice. For the enslaved, it meant reclaiming their lives and dreams. For free citizens, it was a moral awakening to uphold the dignity and equality of every human being in the U.S. Yes, there is still much work to do and I'm not excluding other segments of the population that went on to be enslaved after this. This was a start. The end of African American slavery paved the way for civil rights movements, where people of all backgrounds fought for equality and justice. Women's suffrage, labor rights, and educational equality all draw strength from the spirit of liberation that Juneteenth represents. The economic and cultural contributions of African Americans began to flourish, enriching American society and fostering innovation and progress. Modern movements for social justice, such as criminal justice reform and the fight against systemic racism, continue the work started by those who celebrated the first Juneteenth, striving for a society where every person can thrive. And again, there is much work to do. Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is not just the absence of chains but the presence of opportunity and equality for all. 07/14/2024 To the American Public, In light of the recent and deeply troubling attempt on the life of former President Donald Trump, we find ourselves compelled to address the underlying issues that have brought our nation to this critical juncture. The attempted assassination is not merely an attack on an individual but a stark indicator of the lengths to which certain factions within the Democratic Party are willing to go to maintain their grip on power. This act of violence is disheartening and raises urgent questions about the integrity and motives of the Democratic Party. We must ask ourselves: What do they not want the public to discover? Why are they willing to resort to such drastic measures? What information are they withholding from American citizens? The Democratic Party has increasingly exhibited behaviors that align with domestic terrorism. By perpetuating a culture of fear and divisiveness, they have not only threatened the safety of individuals but also undermined the foundational principles of our democracy. This incident is yet another reason why we must consider the necessity of a new political direction—one that prioritizes unity, justice, and transparency. The Afro Negro American Party (ANAP) stands ready to lead this transformation. Our mission is to create a political environment that truly represents the interests and well-being of all Americans, with a particular focus on the African American community that has long been marginalized and ignored. ANAP is committed to: Economic Empowerment: Implementing policies that foster entrepreneurship and job creation within African American communities. Education Reform: Ensuring that all children have access to high-quality education, thereby closing the achievement gap. Criminal Justice Reform: Advocating for fair and equitable treatment within the justice system. Healthcare Access: Expanding affordable healthcare and addressing health disparities. Community Development: Investing in infrastructure, housing, and social services to improve the quality of life in African American neighborhoods. It is time to move beyond a party that resorts to intimidation and violence to maintain control. The American people deserve a government that works for them, one that is transparent, just, and committed to the common good. The Afro Negro American Party offers this vision for a better future. Today is #Juneteenth, or Juneteenth National Independence Day, a federal holiday in the United States. Celebrated annually on June 19th, Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It's essential to remember that although this day marks a significant milestone, the reality of the time was complex and challenging. When General Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, there were still approximately 250,000 enslaved individuals who were not immediately freed. Many enslavers, resistant to relinquishing free labor, refused to release their slaves until forced to do so by government representatives. Some waited until the completion of one final harvest, while others outright refused to comply. It was a perilous time for Black people, with some formerly enslaved people facing violence and even death as they sought their freedom. As we observe Juneteenth, it's crucial to understand and reflect on the significance of this day. It's more than just a day off work; it's a moment to honor the resilience, courage, and enduring spirit of those who fought for freedom and justice. The history behind Juneteenth is a reminder of the long and ongoing struggle for equality and human rights. Let us use this day to celebrate and educate ourselves and others about the true history and continued impact of this pivotal moment. By acknowledging the past and understanding the "why" behind Juneteenth, we can better appreciate the progress and recognize the work still ahead. Partners' recognizes today, June 19th as Juneteenth. Juneteenth, also known as “Freedom Day” and “Emancipation Day,” is a significant day in American history. Juneteenth marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. Going forward, the country now recognizes Juneteenth each year to reflect on our history and commit to doing better. The legacy of Juneteenth illustrates the power of African Americans’ perseverance, strength, resilience, and refusal to give up hope, even in the toughest of times. However, June 19, 1865, did not mark the end of their journey towards achieving freedom, equality, and justice. It was only the beginning. Let us recognize the accomplishments of those who have fought long and hard for civil rights and social justice and acknowledge the work that we must continue to do to address institutional racism and systemic inequality.

Celebrating “Juneteenth”…this is more than just another holiday - only becoming officially a federal holiday since June 17th, 2021, thanks to President Biden. ———- A quick history on Juneteenth… When President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, the enslavement of African people ended in states controlled by the Confederacy. It wasn't until the 13th Amendment was ratified in December 1865 that slavery was finally abolished in the United States. However, for many Black Americans, life remained the same. Enslaved people in border states were not freed, and for all practical purposes, neither were those in the Confederate states until the Union army entered (…) by Thoughtco.com - https://lnkd.in/e5a3mQey ————— I personally feel something unique about this day in history. My great, great, great…you get the point, grandmother, married her slave owner, Mr. Mumford. That union was more than dangerous, to say the least. They were married and lived in Georgia in mid 1800’s. Georgia was one of the most overtly racist and hostile confederate states of that era. To this day, I dont know how they survived. If a black person looked at a white person back then, you could have been lynched, without justification. Some were, with no hope of justice of any kind, ever being served… Knowing how far my own family and country has come, with a lot of work to be done, I can only hope that our collective future holds better things.
