Development of an in vitro Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) model was always going to be challenging due to multiple factors including difficulty in replicating its architecture and cellular interactions, seeking consistency in mimicking their functional properties effectively and standardisation. It is therefore not surprising that there are not many suitable commercially available models available on the market.
At Cellomatics Biosciences Ltd, we pride ourselves in constantly challenging ourselves and in offering innovative solutions. We have now successfully developed an in vitro Blood Brain Barrier model using a tri co-culture system. This model provides a controlled environment for studying drug permeability, cell-to-cell interactions, and transporter activity, offering a promising solution for preclinical research.

Over the years, several companies have designed different models to represent the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in vitro. These range from simple one cell type models to complex organ on a chip or microfluidic structures. However, there are several drawbacks associated with these models, with single cell models not receiving feedback from the other cells surrounding the vasculature and more complex models being limited by their expense and low throughput.
INNOBEX™ was created in house by the Cellomatics team as a solution to these issues, with three primary cell types making up the model.
