PERFUME COLLECTION: A BEGINNER’S GUIDE A while back, I wrote about my cognoscenti friend and his perfume collection read here if you missed it https://lnkd.in/d5jWDEuh and I promised a guide for budding cognoscenti. Over the next few weeks, I shall be doing a series on the aforementioned topic. What Is a Perfume Collection? A perfume collection, as its name implies, is a collection of scented items in a person’s possession. It is a personal selection of perfumes that reflects the individual's taste and preferences. This goes beyond liquid perfumes and includes scented candles, various creams, soaps etc. Different types of perfume collectors There are different types of perfume collectors. They include: 1. The Niche Enthusiast: Those who only collect the more expensive niche stuff e.g. Byredo, Chris Collins, Amouage, Creed, Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Roja Parfum, Nishane, Acqua di Parma, Mancera etc. 2. The Line Lovers: Those who want to collect everything from a particular fragrance line e.g. Creed, Tom Ford, Gucci, Estee Lauder, Giorgio Armani. Yves Saint Laurent, Guerlain etc. 3. The Brand Devotee: They only collect perfumes from a single brand that they are loyal to. 4. The Note Aficionados: They collect perfumes based on a single or combination of notes e.g. Vanilla, Citrus, Woody and spicy, floral etc. 5. The Trend chasers: People that go the trendy route and collect new and posh perfumes. 6. The Informed Collector: They collect based on gathered information and recommendations. Major and Minor Notes in an Accord. How often do you create a collection based on a dominant note in a fragrance or create a collection based on your lifestyle and preferences ? For example if you like Rose based fragrances, you may want to try other different Roses as much as you can or If you like Citrus, you might want to try Orange Blossom and Neroli. Rose is considered a major floral note and Carnation, Peony, Lilac, Hyacinth are considered minor floral notes. Although in this discussion not all major and minor notes are covered. . Rose : The sweet rose is used in many floral compositions with different interpretations as a major note, either light or as a voluptuous accord. Some classic examples are TEA ROSE from perfumers workshop wherein Rose is blended with Chamomile. Other examples of a Fruity Rose composition is YSL Love again and with Amber accords in Frederic Malle Une Rose rendering a dark Rose. Carnation : A dark Rose with spicy, floral and woody effect. Carnation comes out to be a dark rose with peppery, clove and jasmine like notes, usually dry and spicy. By its character, it is hardly considered as a top floral note but instead its used with major floral notes to add its nuances to the major floral notes. Peony : Peony is considered to be a lighter rose with fruity notes with wet and fresh like notes as an alternative to the heavier opulent rose. Most notable Peony laced fragrances accord is present in Dior Dune and Guerlain Idylle. Lilac : In classical perfumery lilac was considered one of the most important floral notes with freshness of rose and and white character of petals. Mostly associated with air freshners and cleaners. However, Lilac is not used in isolation although it is an important note in nearly all floral bouquets. Hyacinth : Hyacinth has cool and green undertones and when paired with Rose it changes dramatically. A beautiful blend of Rose and Hyacinth can be felt in Grand Amour. Just like other fancy things, the more exclusive the perfume, the more expensive. When it comes to how exclusive they are, perfumes generally fall into two categories: 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐞. 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐬 are crafted by renowned fashion houses like Dior, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, etc. These houses, recognized for their excellence in fashion and luxury, also offer a range of products including clothing and watches. Interestingly, the fragrances offered by these renowned houses are often among their most affordable and accessible offerings, serving as entry points to their prestigious brands. In other words, designer perfumes are readily accessible, and mass produced. And as we already know, increased supply often leads to lower prices. For perfume enthusiasts, widespread availability of a fragrance increases the likelihood of encountering someone else wearing the same scent, which may not be appealing to everyone. Introducing 𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐬. Niche perfume houses prioritize the creation of unique, exclusive and limited perfumes, only. These houses often have a distinct identity that resonates with their followers, whether it's a commitment to exceptional quality standards or a preference for specific fragrance notes. Several niche perfume houses are characterized by their small size and adherence to traditional practices, maintaining a heritage steeped in prestige and devotion to the craft of perfumery. Take, for instance, the renowned Creed perfume house, which boasts a legacy dating back almost three centuries, serving royalty like Queen Victoria. Their perfumery techniques have been meticulously passed down from one generation to another over eight generations. They have remained steadfast in preserving the time-honored tradition of hand-weighing, mixing, and filtering all components, just as they were centuries ago. Whether out of choice or necessity, these fragrance houses limit the number of bottles of fragrances they produce. Summarized a group of favorite Chanel perfumes!! #Chanel No. 5 Perfume Strong Fragrance: I know No. 5 because of Marilyn Monroe, and I have always been curious about what No. 5 smells like as a bedfellow perfume. The light soapy smell smells like foam gently supporting your body, and it is not too sweet. When you spray it on clothes or leather and wear it on your body while walking on the street, you will feel like an elegant and mature urban beauty. - #Chanel No. 5 Perfume Light Fragrance: A very wonderful and gentle old-fashioned soapy feeling, plus a combination of multiple floral scents. Some people say it is like floral water, but this perfume is aged for a certain period of time. The longer it is stored, the better it smells. It is very suitable for bedfellows. Although similar works include diva, elixir, and youth morning dew, No. 5 is still irreplaceable. - #Chanel Black Coco: This is a really nice perfume, especially the base notes. It makes me feel like an unattainable white, rich and beautiful woman with a little smoky voice, cool and sexy, with charming eyes, and I am very capable. When she looks at you, you feel ashamed. #Azure Perfume: The first time I sprayed Azure, I only had one feeling, it smells pretty good, and the presence of grapefruit and lemon is very strong. If my boyfriend uses this, I will definitely want to hold him and inhale it crazily. It smells quite similar to Versace Eros, but not as ostentatious as Eros. I always see people say it is too street fragrance, but I think street fragrance also reflects to a certain extent that it is really good to be so widely used by the public. - #Pink Encounter: Pink Encounter is the one I personally like the most among all the floral and fruity scents... Show yourself, fam! I’ll clock who you are. My pick today is a proper bargain, even for a budget. Today, it’s paco rabanne #Invictus Victory Eau De Parfum. For those curious but not in the know – like I was for time – and didn’t dare ask, what’s the deal with EDT, EDP, #Parfum, Elixir? Here’s the lowdown. Pretty much, they all carry the same scent notes, just with different intensities. (Quick shoutout to the hyped Parfums Christian Dior #Sauvage. Had a chat with Dior and maybe my nose is off, but the Parfum smells miles apart from the Elixir – no cap). So, when you’re picking: EDT = Eau de Toilette, like cologne. Proper nice, but doesn’t last as long as Parfum. FYI, most of the popular Issey Miyake scents are eau de toilette, so don’t write them off. With EDP, you get a more intense scent that’s still subtle, but still just Eau de Parfum. Most folks find the Parfum segment has long-lasting (5-7 hours usually) and decent value scents. Top of the range is Elixir, the most concentrated, usually lasting 7+ hours. But beware – too strong and it can be overpowering in a meeting. Personally, I prefer the Parfum section, but Invictus Victory Eau de Parfum hooked me. The 100 ml version goes for around 35-37,000 Forints. If you’ve heard of Xerjoff Group S.p.A. AMOUAGE or Creed parfum you’ll get why a 100ml Parfum at that price is a steal. Invictus Victory made it to my fave and recommended scents despite the Invictus line being milked dry in marketing. This black Eau de Parfum, at this price range, hit me right in the feels. Fresh and sensual, tart but sweet, with lavender, vanilla, and tonka bean smacking you harder than a kebab at a dodgy joint. It’s got a long finish, making you want to sniff it forever. I can show you loads of top scents in the 100ml 40,000 Ft range, even though this one should be around 55,000. Like they say in the watch world: You can rock an Audemars Piguet Hublot CVSTOS or even ROLEX but BREITLING steals the show. Perfume’s a bit trickier, needing to speak to your soul more than just visuals and feels, but Paco Rabanne Invictus Eau de Parfum does the job. Finally: My son can’t stand it and swears by the silver EDT, my daughter’s into the blue Invictus Parfum, and I wholeheartedly recommend the black one.
