"Two weeks ago, I was so proud of Vancouver’s PuSh Festival for having the courage to rescue The Runner, a play about an Israeli man saving a Palestinian woman, by Canadian playwright Christopher Morris, after it was abruptly cancelled by Victoria’s Belfry Theatre under pressure from pro-Palestinian factions...And then PuSh dropped the show. It succumbed to pressure from U.K.-Palestinian artist Basel Zaraa, who refused to have his interactive show, Dear Laila, produced in the same festival as The Runner. PuSh submitted to his demands and chose censorship over dialogue, thus contributing to the surge of antisemitism in Canada. Why can’t both plays be produced? Why promote the Palestinian show and dump the Jewish play? If The Runner’s content had focused on Black, Indigenous or LGBTQ+ issues, I’m sure the Belfry and PuSh would have defended it. But for Jewish content, apparently, different rules apply...Suddenly, words like inclusion, freedom of speech, equality and diversity ring hollow. What’s next? Will Jewish books be pulled from schools and libraries? If you want to understand how the Nazis began down the path to concentration camps, it started with small steps like these: censorship, intimidation, capitulation and exclusion. This was Hitler’s playbook in 1938, and it’s playing out now, in our own country, in the name of political correctness...The path to peace has to be inclusive. The cutting of The Runner from two theatres in British Columbia was the wrong decision, artistically, ethically and morally, and this is no small thing." https://lnkd.in/g_3Nawbi

How to Be Ageless: Lessons from Frank Sinatra I've always loved the music of Frank Sinatra. It speaks to me of a bygone era, evoking nostalgia for a time marked by elegance and formality, symbolized by images of women in white gloves, gleaming cars, hats and the advent of TV. However, while these symbols might evoke a sense of glamour for some, and for me, I also recognise that they can carry different connotations, especially in the context of racial and social dynamics. Frank Sinatra's involvement in the civil rights movement demonstrates that he did not merely embrace the aesthetic of the times but actively worked to challenge and change societal norms. He was a vocal advocate for racial equality, integrating his performances and supporting African American artists and civil rights initiatives. This aspect of his legacy reminds us that the symbols we associate with a period are also a reflection of our own experience within our social construct. Sinatra's music resonates on a deeply personal level, transcending the specific cultural contexts of its origin. His renditions of songs like "My Way" and "Fly Me to the Moon," although not originally written for him, have became timeless anthems. They embody themes of resilience, individuality, and the joy of living—qualities that are universally relatable and ageless. Was Sinatra able to touch so many because he sought out diverse perspectives? His openness to diverse influences, both in his collaborations and his social advocacy, enriched his music and broadened his appeal. This approach not only made him a legend but also showcased that true agelessness comes from connecting deeply with the essence of life's experiences. #Agelessness #FrankSinatra #TimelessMusic #CivilRights #UniversalThemes #MusicLegacy #Authenticity #LifeLessons #CelebrateDiversity #Resilience #LivingInTheMoment #YourWay #WorkplaceCulture #TimelessValue #Innovation #CelebrateDiversity

As Juneteenth gains recognition as a federal holiday, many are discovering its profound significance. For those unfamiliar, Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, announcing the end of slavery—a full two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. This historic day symbolizes freedom and the rich tapestry of African American culture. If you're wondering how to honor Juneteenth, here are some impactful ways to celebrate: -Sunrise Walk/Run: Begin the day with reflection by joining a sunrise walk or run, contemplating the long journey towards freedom and equality. -Community Meals: Participate in or host a meal featuring traditional African American cuisine. It's a great way to connect and share stories. -Support Black-Owned Businesses: Boost economic empowerment by shopping at Black-owned establishments. -Educational Events: Dive into African American history through lectures, documentaries, and discussions about Juneteenth and social justice. -Visit Historical Sites: Explore museums and cultural centers with special Juneteenth exhibits to deepen your understanding. -Volunteer: Give back by supporting community organizations working towards equality and justice. -Cultural Festivals: Celebrate with music, art, and dance at festivals showcasing African American heritage. -Reflection: Take time for personal meditation, honoring the struggles and victories in the quest for freedom. -Family Activities: Engage your family in educational and creative activities focused on African American culture. -Virtual Events: Participate in online concerts, seminars, or performances if you prefer celebrating from home. Juneteenth is a day for remembrance, celebration, and community. However you choose to observe, it's an opportunity to honor the past and envision a future of justice and equality. Enjoy the holiday and see you next week! #Juneteenth #CelebrateFreedom #SupportBlackBusiness #Community #Equality

The Eurovision Song Contest is often a political spectacle as much as it is a musical competition, and this year's edition was no exception. Switzerland's Nemo clinched victory with their powerful and genre-defying song "The Code," which blends rap, opera, and drum 'n' bass. This high-energy anthem about self-discovery and embracing a non-binary identity resonated deeply with audiences and juries alike, earning Nemo the top spot with 591 points. Nemo, a versatile artist proficient in multiple instruments, has had an eclectic career, from performing as a child in a local cable car station to gaining fame on The Masked Singer Switzerland. Their Eurovision performance, characterized by dynamic staging and vibrant energy, captured the essence of their personal and artistic journey, making it stand out from other entries. The contest was also marked by notable moments, including the controversial disqualification of Dutch artist Joost Klein. Klein's song "Europapa" was removed due to alleged breaches of contest rules, which ironically may have amplified his popularity, possibly overshadowing Nemo's win. Klein's disqualification added a dramatic twist to the event, sparking discussions about the rules and the competitive nature of Eurovision. This year's Eurovision not only highlighted the diverse musical talents across Europe but also underscored the importance of authenticity and personal storytelling in music. As the dust settles, Nemo's victory with "The Code" and the surrounding controversies will be remembered as a significant chapter in Eurovision history. What was your favorite song in Eurovision this year? #Eurovision2024 #Nemo #TheCode #SwitzerlandWins #EurovisionDrama #JoostKlein #MusicCompetition #EurovisionHistory #LGBTQ #DiversityInMusic #EurovisionHighlights

Art in the fight against ageism The project called “Age Against The Machine”, which the Red Cross of Serbia will implement in cooperation with the “Novi Sad - European Capital of Culture” Foundation, began its implementation last week during a meeting of partners that lasted from April 10 to 14, 2024. This meeting brought together representatives of all five partner countries participating in the project. The goal of the “Age Against The Machine” project is to increase the awareness, knowledge and interest of citizens as well as decision makers regarding aging and the position of older persons in modern society. The project will deal with the topic of ageism, i.e. the fight against age discrimination and violence against older persons, and also aims to create an international network of five cities that will publicly advocate the fight against ageism, using a combination of different participatory applied theatre methodologies. Through the “Age Against The Machine” project, discriminatory practices that exist and are aimed at older persons in various areas and stages of life will be specifically investigated and reexamined, with a special emphasis on older women. This project is implemented within the framework of the European Commission's CERV - Network of Cities program, with partners from Denmark, Portugal, Italy, Poland and the Netherlands. A total of 12 activities are planned as part of the project, including one initial training in Novi Sad for project mentors and coordinators, five “Age Against The Machine” festivals in the cities of project partners (Holstebro, Cuneo, Evora, Goljenov, Novi Sad), one conference and five premieres of theater performances with communities in the project partner countries (Poland, Serbia, Portugal, Denmark, Italy) from November 2024 to November 2025. An important partner in the project is the Red Cross of Serbia and its experts Nataša Todorović and Milutin Vračević will be expert support for all partners in the research process in relation to the topics of “ageism”, which refer to various forms of structural discrimination. This will include the review of existing legal regulations in Europe and partner countries. A new questionnaire on ageism will also be piloted during the project. Through an interactive approach and intergenerational solidarity, we will try to draw attention to the fact that we need to redefine our relationship to older persons and that everyone can be a factor of change, and through art and theater we can reach a larger number of people. #ageagainstthemachine #cerv #networkoftowns #ageism Photos:V Veličković
