Read Abbotsford's story 👉👉 https://bit.ly/4cCkE2l At the hub of the Fraser Valley is Abbotsford, British Columbia, the largest municipality in the province outside of the Vancouver metro area. There, city and contracted crews provide fully automated curbside collection services for garbage, recycling, and organics for more than 26,000 households. “We really like the Curbside tool because it gives us information about specific households rather than a giant zone. We can really identify hot spots and really direct our educational efforts there." - Julie Kanya, Solid Waste and Environmental Coordinator for the City of Abbotsford. 90% of us routinely recycle — so why does so much of our rubbish still end up in landfill? MattRudd interviews Helen Holmes in this article which explores our current 'rubbish' recycling rates (honourable exemption for Wales!). Helen's research with the #OneBin project shows that consumers usually want to 'do the right thing' but are hampered by inconsistent, confusing or inadequate recycling systems. With new, simplified, systems in the pipeline, there is hope that consumers will be able to recycle more, helping councils reduce waste and generate more income from recycling. https://lnkd.in/ecVuuJ48 The University of Manchester School of Social Sciences

Fly tipping is NEVER acceptable. It's a blight on our community and harms our environment. Let's all take a stand against this illegal activity! Remember, there are proper ways to dispose of bulky items - you can book a bulky collection through Sandwell Council or take them to the Household Recycling Centre. Let's work together to keep our streets clean and beautiful! 📊 Did you know?In 2022/23, there were 1.08 million fly-tipping incidents reported by DEFRA. This is a concerning figure that highlights the importance of responsible waste disposal. Let's do our part to reduce this number and protect our environment. Join us in spreading awareness and taking action against fly tipping! Together, we can make a difference and create a cleaner, safer community for all. #StopFlyTipping #ProtectOurEnvironment #ResponsibleDisposal #CleanCommunity #NoToFlyTipping #CommunityCleanUp ##flytippingisacrime #Sandwell #Serco https://lnkd.in/ei7-gJVa https://lnkd.in/e37TKMbY https://lnkd.in/euBmkcFx

The groups shortlisted in this year's Waste Management Category, presented by Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA), are innovating the way we #repurpose, #reduce, and dispose of #waste! Goodwill Industries of Alberta’s Repair for Good Program upcycles and refurbishes donated furniture, diverting over 25,000 kg from landfills since 2021, with over 8300 kg diverted in 2023 alone. Backroads Reclamation is turning Old Canadian Wood into new wood products to last another lifetime, saving as much lumber as possible while keeping it from the landfill or bonfire. Violet Grove’s Constructed Floating Wetlands System with Aeration aims to revolutionize #wastewater treatment in colder climates. With a vision to enhance effluent quality and promote environmental sustainability, this initiative introduces innovative natural treatment processes, leveraging the efficacy of wetlands even in cold climate settings. Some very important points noted in this article by Matt Rudd for The Times. Essentially, we are not really recycling anymore and have been incinerating waste at an alarming rate, releasing pollutants into our breathing air and atmosphere. Very pleasing to see Wales taking the lead on this in the UK, and that new rules will be coming in 2025 called Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Isn't it about time we banned single use plastics? ~Abi Wheelie bin nation: is all our sorting going to waste? https://lnkd.in/eWF8XE5R

As shared in the newsletter of Shelburne Business and Professional Association. Town Manager Matt’s 124 words in 2024: Feb 28 Trash talk. I’m an alternate on the governing board for Chittenden Solid Waste District. They have an impressive network of options to handle our waste and help keep our environment clean. Their annual report describes 309,000 tons of waste from the county’s 169,000 residents and 8,000 businesses. Of that trash, 39% goes to the landfill. Relative to the rest of the US, that’s a good rate, but we could do more, especially related to food waste and composting. Trash data is also a useful economic indicator, as waste matches consumer spending pretty closely. So it might be good news for the local economy, that CSWD showed surprising year-over-year increases in materials handled for each of the most recent six months, August through January.
