Happy Friday Ladies! So… what’s on the agenda for 2024?   According to the International Labour Organization (#ILO) in 2018, it’s mooting the 1935 Convention 45 this year - that barred women from working underground at any mine (1) #womeninmining   Great! But how would another “OK” for women TO SIMPLY BE in the mining industry comfort you? …It means you are not the only voice – there is a global choir. #ForgeYourFutureFearlessly   The Mineral Council of South Africa (#MCSA) openly declares: “Women in the South African mining industry face a range of challenges – some shared by their male counterparts and many that are theirs alone… women working in the industry should have the same opportunities open to them as men – and must be safe to pursue them.” (2)   Though their last survey shows that only 12% of people in the SA #miningindustry is represented by women, the #MCSA isn’t oblivious to the #challengesandopportunities. There is an active and supported call to address #safety, to adapt equipment, to fast-forward #modernization in mining methods, and (centrally) for #genderbasedviolence and discrimination to be clenched.   The International Woman in Mining (#IWiM) organization published the MCSA report, saying “physical strength will become less important than fine motor skills, dexterity and problem-solving abilities. This shift will create significant opportunities for women in the industry.” (3)   In 2022, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, at the 13th Annual Women in Mining Conference (#WiMSA), included the following key challenges, “that prevent women from entering the mining and mineral value chain:” ·        Gender bias ·        Lack of information on existing opportunities ·        Poor or limited networking opportunities ·        Inadequate role models, ·        Lack of business skills and education.   At Dayenu Mining Consultants, Natalie Roos and Anna-Marie Oliver have spouses who currently work underground - though they are no strangers to the UG paradigm themselves.   Natalie (16 years in Mining) says, “The mining industry has taught me a lot of skills and knowledge - but consulting has given me the opportunity to use it.”   Anna-Marie (who you may know from our #skillsgap post) says her job is to create job opportunities – not only by underground mine-planning – but by adhering to the goal of trying to increase the quality of life for existing communities. Shattering Stereotypes; Women Thriving in Mining Industry Careers; Breaking Barriers Onsite. In the traditionally male-dominated realm of mining, women are increasingly making their mark, challenging stereotypes, and contributing to the industry's evolution. As we celebrate International Women's Day, it's fitting to shine a spotlight on the remarkable women who have chosen to forge careers on mine sites, breaking barriers and reshaping perceptions. The resilience and determination exhibited by women working on mine sites are noteworthy. Overcoming physical demands and prevailing stereotypes, these women play a crucial role in dispelling outdated beliefs about gender-specific capabilities. Their achievements inspire not only their peers but also future generations of women considering careers in the mining industry. Taking the opportunity of this day to express my deepest gratitude for the incredible teamwork that has defined our collaboration on the Skouries Site. Working alongside such a dedicated and talented group of individuals has been an inspiring journey, and I am genuinely thankful for each one of you, whether included in this photo or not. Let's celebrate the achievements of women working on mine sites and acknowledge the ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive, diverse, and welcoming environment. By breaking down barriers, fostering equality, and recognizing the invaluable contributions of women in mining, we pave the way for a brighter and more progressive future for the industry. “One major way to usher in change and diversity is to make companies more resilient, more approachable, more welcoming, and more sustainable – just like the woman who could lead them,” said Maria Combrink, Deputy Chairperson, Women In Mining South Africa (WiMSA), during her opening remarks at the 15th Annual Women in Mining Conference & Career Expo, hosted by Intelligence Transfer Centre (ITC). The event features women from around world who have made visible contributions above and beyond their daily responsibilities in the mining industry. Over the next three days topics to be unpacked include whether desired targets are being reached in achieving inclusivity; investing in meaningful and progressive change for women within mining; looking at transformation as not only a regulatory requirement but a business imperative to minimise accidents and dangerous incidents in line with investing in the Health & Safety of WiM; leadership in a rapidly changing world, looking at inclusion as one of the greatest assets in ensuring long-term sustainability; and the role of digital innovation in the mining industry. #womeninmining #genderequality #transformation #healthandsafety #womenempowerment #womeninleadership

This change is paving the way for diversity and inclusion, which are critical for innovation and growth. During my experience at Central Systems, I had the pleasure of working with some amazing women. A shout-out to you all today! Their dedication and expertise were truly inspiring. As the monthly recognition and celebration of our Women in Mining #iwd24 is coming to an end, does not mean the end of our efforts to promote women participation in the mining sector. The mining industry can foster a positive mindset shift, promote gender #diversity, and create a more inclusive and equitable environment for women to thrive in mining roles. To develop a program aimed at fostering a mindset shift in the mining industry and increasing the #inclusion of women, several key strategies can be implemented 1. Gender Sensitization Workshops Conduct workshops and training sessions focused on gender equality, diversity, and inclusion in the mining sector. These workshops should address unconscious biases, promote #awareness of gender-related challenges, and emphasize the benefits of a diverse workforce. 2. Leadership Training Provide leadership development programs that emphasize the importance of gender #diversity and #inclusion. Encourage leaders to champion diversity initiatives, create inclusive work environments, and support the advancement of women in mining roles. 3. Mentorship and Networking Opportunities Establish mentorship programs that pair experienced professionals with women entering the mining industry. Encourage networking events, conferences, and forums where women can connect with industry leaders, share experiences, and build supportive relationships. 4. Flexible Work Policies Implement flexible work arrangements to accommodate the needs of women in the mining industry, such as remote work options, flexible hours, and parental leave policies. Creating a supportive work environment that values work-life balance can attract and retain female talent. 5. Promotion of Role Models Highlight successful women in mining through case studies, success stories, and recognition programs. Showcasing female role models can inspire other women to pursue careers in the industry and demonstrate that leadership positions are attainable. 6. Collaboration with Educational Institutions Partner with universities and technical schools to promote mining careers to female students, offer scholarships, and provide internships or apprenticeship programs. Regular Monitoring and Evaluation: Establish mechanisms to track the progress of the program, measure the participation and advancement of women in the mining sector, and assess the impact of mindset shifts within the industry. This year’s theme ‘I am mining and I belong’ calls on all of us to reflect on what belonging in mining means to each of us and how we can reinforce it every day. Belonging goes beyond mere representation; it encompasses feeling valued, respected, and integral to the industry's success. It’s about ensuring that every voice is heard, every talent is recognised, and every individual feels a sense of ownership and pride in their work.    Reflect on the dialogues we can initiate and sustain in our workplaces to nurture a more inclusive environment. These conversations are vital in breaking down barriers, challenging stereotypes, and fostering a culture of acceptance and support. Whether through formal discussions, casual conversations, or structured programmes, we have the power to drive change from within.    Consider the concrete actions and behaviours we can pledge to adopt. This might include mentoring programmes, diversity training sessions, inclusive hiring practices, and creating safe spaces for open dialogue. Small, consistent actions can lead to significant change over time. For example, we can make a conscious effort to include diverse perspectives in decision-making processes, recognise and celebrate the achievements of all employees, and provide equal opportunities for career advancement.
