What price heritage? This weekend past there was an article in the press to the effect that the MOD was preparing to abandon the great Britannia Royal Naval College at Dartmouth in favour of a new consolidated training establishment "elsewhere". How sad to see this historic establishment reduced to this, one reason the MOD has proposed for abandonment is the cost of maintenance, the report told that the building, it replaced old "wooden wall" ships of the line, was now in such a degraded state that parts of it are too dangerous to use. This is very much what happened to Greenwich when the MOD decided to dispose of the estate as part of "the peace dividend" when the iron curtain came down. Fortunately Greenwich is in London so it has survived handsomely, what a small town like Dartmouth could do with the vast mouldering pile of BRNC when its purpose of training Naval officers is terminated is anyone's guess. So, the big question is, how important is the intangible impact of Heritage captured in historic buildings? In an age when it is fashionable to deny or worse, discredit, history does this matter? When our Armed Forces are reduced to an minor adjunct of NATO how much does that ethos of past victories matter? Personally, i do not know, but at my age and family history i cannot avoid a deep sense of loss and sadness.

Being a Marine is a privilege, a crucible that forges strength, honor, and an unbreakable bond with a brotherhood like no other. But to be a father of Marines, to see your own flesh and blood embrace that legacy, is an honor that transcends words. It's witnessing the values you instilled – courage, commitment, integrity – take root and flourish in the very souls you brought into this world. The legacy of the Marines isn't simply earned, it's ingrained. It's woven into the fabric of your being, a birthright claimed through sweat, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication. It's more than a title; it's a way of life, a code of conduct that guides your every action and decision. And the fraternity, oh, the fraternity. It's a bond forged in the fires of shared experience, a connection that runs deeper than blood. It's knowing that no matter where life takes you, you'll always have brothers and sisters watching your back, ready to stand beside you, until the very end. To be a Marine is to be part of something larger than yourself, a force for good in a world that desperately needs it. To be a father of Marines is to see that legacy carried forward, to know that the values you hold dear will live on in the next generation. It's a privilege, an honor, and a responsibility that I will cherish forever. https://lnkd.in/gMGsKMxA

The history and traditions of the Academies are unlike any other. Here's a few examples. The Academies have produced 3 U.S. Presidents, tied with Harvard and Yale for the most. Whoa. West Point produced 445 generals, just for the Civil War alone. Of the 4-star Admirals, the Naval Academy produced 90% of them. When you visit the Academies, you'll understand. It's American history. It is excellence. That's why there were roughly 40,000+ Academy applications. 40,000! And yet only approx. 5,000 were offered appointments. So how does this help YOU, the applicant? Go visit, and it will fuel you to put every ounce of effort into your application. Because you'll need the motivation when the going gets tough. It'll require all of you.

Last night, I had the immense honor of attending the Sunset Parade, at the Marine Corps Memorial, in honor of Senator Ted Budd (R-NC). The Marine Corps’ sunset and evening parades are always beautiful, but I found myself a bit emotional watching last night. Last night, Kayla Haas served as Adjutant of the parade. For those unaware, it is incredibly rare to see a woman in the parade. It’s even more rare to see them leading it, as Adjutant. For generations, little girls saw Marines and had to question whether they could hold their own among the ranks of men. Sure, they could aspire to become a United States Marine, but they didn’t have a visual representation of what they were striving to become - a role model or a hero, if you will. Now, little girls across the country have the chance to SEE that they, too, can become United States Marines. It’s no longer simply a dream. It’s clear as day - they can break through ceilings, they can blaze new trails, and they can lead United States Marines. She did that. #marinecorps #marines #semperfidelis #betheone #washingtondc

💐 Building a Legacy starts with an idea - an idea that considers the possible and then reaches for the impossible. It is not limited by the status quo, it is not constrained by the conventional. It looks passed what is and imagines what could be. It taps into a not so common theme that inspires others to build upon the idea, that together, we can make a difference for generations to come. It looks forward to the day that my children and the children of San Antonio will be able to sit in the shade of a tree that someone planted long ago... Happy Mother’s Day - May we continue Building Futures 💐 Port San Antonio, Kelly Heritage Foundation, Boeing Center at Tech Port, Centurion Military Alliance (CMA), Airman Heritage Group, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas, Our Community Salutes San Antonio (OCS SA)

"Every year on September 17th our nation is blessed as we honor and celebrate our Constitution and Citizenship Day. On this day we are reminded of the enduring significance of the United States Constitution—a document that has shaped the fabric of our nation since its inception. It is more than just a set of laws; it is the bedrock upon which our country's values, freedoms, and system of governance are built. For over two centuries, the Constitution has guided our nation through times of peace and turmoil, ensuring that the principles of liberty, justice, and equality remain at the heart of the American experience. At Georgia Military College, we believe that the values embodied in the Constitution are synonymous with the values we hold so dear—duty, honor, and love of country—and are not only central to the American identity but also fundamental to the education and development of our students. These values reflect the very core of what we strive to instill in each of them as we develop each into an authentic servant leader. Just as the Constitution has provided a framework for our nation's growth and success, these principles of patriotism guide our journey to contribute to society and lead with integrity." NPS is proud of our partnership with the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, and of the superb work done by the inaugural Climate Security Fellows. As the first class, they set a high bar for the next cohort. Climate change has naval and national security implications, and the fellow’s research solutions are focused on mitigating causes and effects to reduce impact and suffering while increasing resiliency. The urgency is evident as the devastating effects of Hurricanes Helene and Milton on the southeast amass. • How can climate change impact U.S. Navy and Marine Corps operations? Saw this in an email this morning. Fascinating. Human Factors in Combat: A groundbreaking course at the Naval Academy As future officers of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps prepare to face the complexities of modern warfare, a unique course at the U.S. Naval Academy is helping midshipmen address one of the most critical yet overlooked aspects of combat — the human element. The Human Factors in Combat course, now in its second semester, explores the physical, psychological, and emotional challenges faced by service members in combat environments. The course is designed to equip midshipmen with the tools needed to lead effectively in the most stressful of circumstances. Capt. Andrew Ledford, a professor at the Naval Academy and the lead instructor for the course, highlighted its importance in shaping future leaders. ”It's the human factors piece that is really, really difficult to discuss,” Ledford said. “But it's really, really important.” (usna.edu) Rafael Matos, Ph.D.

He said, "You're not some charlatan on the Internet." Do you take breaks and get outdoors? Yesterday, I took a walk in the local George Washington State Park and Campground in Glocester, Rhode Island. This park has a fascinating history. In the 1960s, an Australian naval unit waited for their ship, the HMS Perth, to be completed in Newport. During their stay, they created a trail system in honor of Aboriginal culture, called the Walkabout Trail. Afterwards, I had a meeting with an old friend interested in investing. I enjoy meeting people and helping to raise awareness about real-estate investing. Yesterday, I learned, "Pete, you're doing it, and I know you; you're not some charlatan on the Internet." Trust is hard to build. I've known Walter Steere for more than 20 years. So remember, it takes time, and you may be seen as some charlatan on the Internet at first.
