Great news from Ireland! Four new areas for offshore wind announced 🇮🇪 At Wind Energy Ireland's Offshore Wind Conference last week, the Irish government published four new locations for offshore wind farms to be located off the country’s south coast. The locations are part of the Government’s draft Designated Maritime Area Plan for offshore wind energy on the South Coast. One site off the coast of Waterford, named Tonn Nua, has been chosen for an auction (ORESS 2.1) to open before the end of the year. This is the start of Phase 2, setting the path Ireland will take to deliver 5 GW offshore wind by 2030, 20GW by 2040 and at least 37GW in total by 2050. -After ORESS 1, where among others NISA and Codling projects with Norwegian developers were awarded, Ireland delivers once again with a leasing and second auction round starting this year. This builds a foundation for Ireland to be one of the main markets for Norwegian companies, says Alfred Risan, leader for the Working group for UK and Ireland, in Norwegian Offshore Wind (NOW). He points out that NOW has targeted Ireland for a long time and will follow up with activities the coming months. Norwegian companies in the supply chain have already seen opportunities in Ireland. -Offshore wind plays a dominant role in Ireland’s transition to renewable energy and there is a growing pipeline of projects. The ORE roadmap promotes activity in Ireland by building confidence and PGS can facilitate the rapid development plans to deliver on their targets, says Christine Roche, Business development Manager in PGS. Amazon Books Over Half of Moray West Offshore Wind Capacity to Power UK Operations Amazon has signed a corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) for a total of 473 MW of Moray West offshore wind farm’s generation capacity to help power its operations when the project becomes operational later this year. The technology giant signed the CPPA with ENGIE, which owns the Moray West project through Ocean Winds, the 50-50 joint venture between ENGIE and EDP Renewables. The 473 MW Amazon secured through the agreement is enough to power the equivalent of more than 650,000 UK homes annually and is more than half of the total installed capacity of the 882 MW Moray West offshore wind farm. The project already has 100 MW of its generation capacity reserved since 2022, when Google entered into a twelve-year corporate power purchase agreement with ENGIE for Moray West. Located in the Moray Firth in northeast Scotland, the offshore wind farm is currently under construction, with foundation installation underway. Moray West will comprise 60 Siemens Gamesa 14.7 MW wind turbines and is scheduled to generate power in 2024 and be fully operational in 2025. Ocean Winds says it is following an accelerated development and construction plan, with capacity from the site supporting Amazon’s goal of powering all operations with 100 percent renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of the company’s original target. According to a press release from the Moray West developer, Amazon’s investment in solar and wind projects has led the company to become Europe’s and the UK’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy. Last year, the technology company entered into a collaboration agreement with Iberdrola, which also involves power purchases from two of Iberdrola’s offshore wind farms in Germany, Baltic Eagle and Windanker. In 2020, Amazon signed a ten-year CPPA with Ørsted to offtake the output of 250 MW from the 900 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm in Germany and increased the reserved capacity by a further 100 MW the following year. #PPA #offshorewind https://lnkd.in/gJbBF5US

Read the article at Electrek, “World’s first semi-submersible floating offshore wind farm still smashing its own power records,” by Michelle Lewis—October 7, 2024. “Portugal’s WindFloat Atlantic – the world’s first semi-submersible floating offshore wind farm – is now four years old and still breaking its own power output records. The 25 megawatt (MW) WindFloat Atlantic, which came online in July 2020, was also continental Europe’s first floating offshore wind farm. Its majority shareholder is Ocean Winds, a 50-50 joint venture between Spanish renewable company EDP Renewables and global energy firm ENGIE. WindFloat Atlantic’s electricity production has steadily increased, reaching 78 GWh in 2022 and 80 GWh in 2023. In July 2024, it recorded a total cumulative production of 320 GWh, providing power annually to over 25,000 households in Viana do Castelo, north of Porto, while preventing more than 33,000 tons of CO2 emissions and creating 1,500 direct and indirect jobs. The offshore wind farm sits 20 km off the Portuguese coast. It comprises three 8.4 megawatt (MW) Vestas wind turbines that sit on semi-submersible, three-column floating platforms anchored by chains to the seabed…” Read the full story below and at this link. https://lnkd.in/gB4YHYm5 #offshorewind #floatingwind #cleanenergy #renewables #climate #offshorewindca #pacificoffshorewindsummit
