I’m looking forward to the Farnborough International Airshow later this month (#FIA2024) and to meeting up with some of the dignitaries I met earlier this year at FIDAE - FERIA INTERNACIONAL DEL AIRE Y DEL ESPACIO   There is growing interest within the aerospace and defence sectors for solid-state replacements for hard disk drives (as well as magneto-optic and even floppy drives) that were designed into #Aircraft, #AutomaticTestEquipment (#ATE), #Computers, #RadarSystems etc. several decades ago but which are now failing.   The #Airshow runs from Monday 22nd to Friday 26th, inclusive. NEXT GEN ROTORCRAFT FOR EDF €40.000.000 IN 2021 , ANOTHER GO IN 2024 WITH THE €100.000.000 . In 2021 EUROPE DEFENCE FUND funded Airbus helicopters lead consortium , including Leonardo helicopters , for a €40.000.000 by EDF ENGRT program . Program was focused on the next generation EU military rotorcrafts. The project included the studies of future rotorcraft features and capabilities , alternative rotorcraft platforms , flight demonstrators and simulators , concepts. If the 2 largest helicopter manufacturers in Europe executed the program requirements why than the this program comes again ? Under the leaked EURACTIV data , EUROPEAN DEFENCE FUND in 2024 is planning to launch the NEXT GEN HELICOPTER program again and this time prepared the whopping €100.000.000 ... https://lnkd.in/dUWV7yjq ''The development of the next-generation helicopter is set to receive the largest contribution from the EU budget, currently set at €100 million, according to the document''. Won't it be a step on the same rake ? The next generation helicopter or helicopter 2.0 program targeted to find the novel rotorcraft construction capable to cross physical boundaries of helicopter 1.0 - min 400km/h with min 1700 km range . Earlier AIRBUS HELICOPTERS announced that to fulfill such requirements helicopter 1.0 version will become heavier than 17 000 kg . Larger weigh = larger tanks = large weight . The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has awarded Lockheed Martin Sikorsky a pivotal contract to explore integrated platform concepts for NATO’s Next Generation Rotorcraft Capability (NGRC) program. This study aims to identify innovative rotorcraft solutions that will enhance defense and deterrence in an evolving global landscape. Andrew Adams, Vice President of Sikorsky Future Vertical Lift, stated, “Sikorsky is prepared to design a rotorcraft prototype for NATO’s NGRC concept study, leveraging our X2 technology. Years of investment and rigorous testing have demonstrated its potential to reshape future airspace.” Lockheed Martin Sikorsky will collaborate with its European Industry Group, which includes notable aerospace suppliers such as BAE Systems, GE Aerospace, Safran, and Rheinmetall. This partnership will integrate advanced technologies, including digital thread and advanced manufacturing, to deliver a rotorcraft system with superior speed, range, and operational flexibility. The X2 rotorcraft program has seen over $1 billion in investment and 15 years of development. The S-97 RAIDER technology demonstrator continues to provide essential data, refining the capabilities of Sikorsky’s X2 aircraft. Stacy Cummings, NSPA General Manager, remarked, “Concept Study #5 marks a key milestone for the NGRC program. Our approach maximizes industry expertise and engagement, offering a broad range of potential solutions for our multinational partners.” The NGRC program, initiated in 2022, involves France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, the UK, and Canada, with the US and Spain observing. The goal is to develop a medium-class, multi-role rotorcraft to replace existing helicopters. Brazilian defence prime Embraer signed an MoU with the Austrian Industrial Cooperation & Aviation Technology (AICAT) on 18 April in an attempt to enhance international cooperation in the aerospace sector. The two parties will explore opportunities for joint research and technology development and will determine how Austrian industry can contribute to the supply chain of Embraer’s aircraft programmes. According to Reinhard Marak, CEO of AICAT, “an intensified cooperation with Embraer is a great opportunity and will help both Embraer and the Austrian aeronautical sector, creating a more structured collaboration for their mutual benefit.” This cooperation will add to Embraer’s existing relationships in Austria. The two counties entered into bilateral cooperation activities and joint research projects in 2019. In September 2023, Austria selected Embraer’s C-390 airlift to replace its C-130K Hercules. India Advances Hypersonic Technology with BrahMos-2 and HSTDV Programs India's hypersonic technology progresses with the BrahMos-2 hypersonic cruise missile and the Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle. BrahMos-2, a collaboration between the Indian Institute of Science and the the Moscow Aviation Institute, aims for speeds surpassing Mach 7 with a 600 km range. The effort emphasizes heat shields, aerodynamics, and scramjet engines. Anticipated prototypes within five years make BrahMos-2 a potential game-changer. The indigenous HSTDV targets Mach 6 speeds, serving as a testbed for future hypersonic missiles. India's commitment to hypersonic capabilities signifies its intent to compete globally, potentially revolutionizing warfare with faster, more agile missiles and aircraft in the coming decade.
