Energy company OX2 and Ingka Group , which owns IKEA, announced plans to develop a 370-turbine offshore wind farm with the latest 15MW sized machines, at 370 metres tall. This is one of 10 offshore wind farm projects that are currently ‘under development’ (ie construction has not yet begun, nor approval necessarily granted) by OX2 off the coasts of Sweden and Finland. The total number of turbines that could be installed across all of them is around 1,300, with approximately 12GW of power expected to be generated. In the Aurora farm, each turbine has a capacity of 15MW, which will generate a total of 5.5GW across all 370. Aurora is 22 kilometres south of the island of Gotland and 30km east of Öland in the Baltic Sea, and if granted approval, construction could begin in 2028. The turbines here could also be fitted with sensors, says OX2 , to help with surveillance and control in the area, which ‘is of importance to the Swedish Armed Forces’. “Export cables from the farm are planned to go to the mainland but also directly to Gotland,” said Emelie Zakrisson, head of Development of Offshore Wind in Sweden for OX2. “The large-scale production from Aurora would facilitate for more local electricity production to be developed as well as hydrogen production to help decarbonize industry and heavy transports.” As a first step towards winning approval, the scheme has been granted a Natura 2000 permit by the County Administrative Board. This means that it does not believe the wind farm will harm ‘species worthy of protection’. It will then recommend the project to the government to consider approvals. Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn, a joint venture between Plenitude (Eni) and HitecVision, have been granted offshore planning approval for the Green Volt floating wind project in Scotland. Green Volt has now received all its planning approvals, including onshore consent earlier this month and this latest offshore approval. Green Volt will feature up to 35 floating wind turbines totalling 560 MW and forms a key project in the Crown Estate Scotland’s Innovation and Targeted Oil & Gas (INTOG) leasing round. “It is fantastic to have received the green light to deliver the world’s biggest floating offshore wind project, right here in the Scottish North Sea,” noted Nicol Stephen, CEO at Flotation Energy. “This major milestone places Flotation Energy and our Joint Venture Partner, Vårgrønn, firmly at the heart of the energy transition. “Gaining consent just over a year after our seabed exclusivity was awarded is a testament to the commitment, speed and determination of our Green Volt team, the Scottish Government and its key agencies. " “With Green Volt being Europe’s first commercial-scale floating wind project, achieving offshore consent for the project marks an important moment for the whole offshore wind industry,” explained Olav Hetland, CEO at Vårgrønn. “At 560 MW, Green Volt serves as an essential stepping stone from current small-scale projects to gigawatt-size developments, supporting the supply chain in scaling up new technology. “Floating wind is set to be a huge global market in the decades to come. By being a frontrunner, Scotland is now positioned to be home to world-leading expertise and a whole industry of new jobs." Once online, the Green Volt is expected to displace 1 million tonnes of carbon emissions per annum. “It is great news that we have consented the first project in the Crown Estate Scotland’s Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas (INTOG) leasing round – this is a significant milestone which will help secure Scotland’s place at the forefront of floating wind technology,” commented First Minister of Scotland Humza Yousaf. “Scotland is one of the best places in the world to develop offshore wind and its supply chain and we are determined to maximise the huge economic opportunity offshore wind can bring." #cleanenergy

Congratulations to Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn for securing a Contract for Difference from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (ESNZ) for the Green Volt offshore floating wind project. It took a big effort from both companies, and bodies from different sectors, to reach this point. This is a major milestone on the way to electrifying oil and gas installations in the Outer Moray Firth area of the North Sea and helping the industry get to net zero by 2050. Ampelmann Boosts Taiwan’s Offshore Wind Market with Two E1000 Systems Reading Time: 1 minutesAmpelmann, the Dutch offshore access provider, has bagged a contract for two E1000 systems in Taiwan. These will support Vestas Taiwan in turbine commissioning, reaffirming Ampelmann’s role in expanding Taiwan’s offshore wind market. The E1000 motion compensated system is based on Ampelmann’s E-type system technology but has additional capacity to handle cargo of up to 1,000kg. The system can compensate for waves up to 4.5m Hs and takes less than one minute to change from people to cargo transfer mode.
