Formula 1 is shifting gears towards sustainability! 🏎️ Did you know that Formula 1 is not just racing on the track but also racing to reduce its environmental footprint? By using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), F1 is slashing aviation emissions by up to 80%, making its global logistics much more eco-friendly. Here’s the twist though...SAF is only produced in limited locations. So how does F1 fuel its globe-trotting charter flights? Through the "Book and Claim" system, ensuring that while their planes might not always use SAF, the carbon savings are still counted toward their emissions goals. F1 isn’t just racing on the track—they're speeding ahead in the fight against climate change! Here's how they're leading the way- 🌱Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) powers F1’s logistics, cutting aviation emissions by 80%. Using the "Book and Claim system", F1 ensures SAF is used, even if not in their own planes, allowing them to claim carbon savings and meet sustainability targets. DHL’s provision of SAF for F1 air cargo is verified by the ISCC - International Sustainability and Carbon Certification, ensuring strict sustainability standards. 🌱F1’s investment in SAF is a key part of their goal to reach Net Zero by 2030. For the 2024 season, SAF will cover cargo flights, reducing emissions by over 4,500 tCO2e. 🌱To further reduce their carbon footprint, F1 has implemented a remote broadcast operation, meaning fewer people and equipment travel to races, with production handled from the UK. 🌱Starting in 2026, F1 will introduce new engine regulations with the mandatory use of 100% advanced sustainable fuels. This drop-in fuel can be blended with traditional fuels and used in existing engines without modifications, ushering in a new era for both racing and other sectors like aviation and shipping. As Ellen Jones, Head of ESG at Formula 1, said, "SAF is just the latest step...and underscores how alternative fuels both on and off track can materially reduce carbon emissions." #Sustainability #F1 #SAF #NetZero2030 #GreenLogistics

Formula 1 (F1) has announced its first investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) via a “book and claim” model with DHL, as it aims to reach net zero by 2030. As the sector and SAF infrastructure is expanding, it is not possible to directly fuel cargo planes used to move freight with SAF, says F1 in a Sept 20 announcement. Hence, the “book and claim” model allows F1 to “book” the required fuel amount via DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, which then gets added to the supply chain in other planes where SAF is directly available. The first phase of F1’s investment began in March with SAF purchases through DHL for air cargo to the Australian Grand Prix. As at the Singapore Grand Prix, approximately 20% of subsequent F1 cargo flights to races outside of Europe this year have been scheduled to use DHL’s GoGreen Plus service with SAF. That said, F1’s ESG head Ellen Jones declined to reveal the investment sum at a Sept 20 media briefing in Singapore. Apart from switching to sustainable fuels, Jones mentioned how the championship organiser is “rationalising” the race calendar “to decrease the distance from point A to point B, which equates to lower carbon emissions”. In 2023, the Grands Prix in Azerbaijan, Japan and Qatar took place in April, September and October respectively. This year, the Grands Prix in Azerbaijan, Japan and Qatar were shifted to September, April and December respectively. With the Australian, Japanese and Chinese races scheduled in succession this year between March and April, does the championship organiser hope to shift Singapore’s race closer to the first half of the race calendar? “I think it is about how it all fits together… When you move one piece of the puzzle, another shifts,” says Jones in response to The Edge Singapore. “So, it’s not quite as straightforward as moving things, because you have things like climate [and] elements such as holidays; and once you add those types of pieces together, you will get a different calendar.” Jones adds: “I won’t make any guesses in terms of things moving because that would probably be a headline… It’s really about how we look at the calendar as a whole, and how we balance these factors and then, with our calendar, apply the appropriate logistics solution.” Read the full story on The Edge Singapore.

🏎️ Formula 1's Shift to 100% Sustainable Fuel: A Game Changer for Motorsport and the Environment 🌍 As F1 speeds towards its goal of becoming net-zero carbon by 2030, the transition to 100% sustainable fuel is a huge milestone not just for the sport, but for the future of high-performance automotive technology. 🔋 Starting in 2026, F1 cars will run on biofuels and synthetic fuels made from renewable sources like agricultural waste and carbon capture. This shift ensures that F1 continues to deliver adrenaline-pumping races while drastically reducing carbon emissions—proving that performance and sustainability can go hand in hand. F1's hybrid power units already use 40% less fuel per race since their introduction in 2014, and the adoption of 100% sustainable fuel will take it to the next level. The development of these fuels could influence not only motorsport but other industries like aviation and shipping, where electrification isn't yet feasible. 🌱 This is a bold step towards a cleaner, greener future, showing how innovation in motorsport can pave the way for change across the automotive world. #F1 #Sustainability #GreenInnovation #AutomotiveIndustry #CleanEnergy #Formula1 #Motorsport #SustainableFuture Image credit: sportscardsdirect. co. uk

📰 Safe Landing were featured in this article by Vitas Carosella in Forbes (https://lnkd.in/eYmUiXSf), about the use of #SAF by the Formula E electric motorsport competition. 🚗 Formula E just trialled its first use of so-called "Sustainable Aviation Fuel" (SAF) in collaboration with its logistics partner DHL. ✈️ Three DHL planes using "SAF" transported all race materials from Berlin to Shanghai, a more than 6,000-mile trip. 👩✈️ According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the use of "SAF" helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80%. 👨✈️ However, not all experts agree on SAFs perceived benefits. Finlay Asher, a mechanical engineer and member of Safe Landing — a group of aviation workers challenging the industry to conform with climate science — says the use of SAF is not scalable and that our resources should be put to better use to effectively combat climate change. 👩🔧 Julia Pallé, Formula E’s VP of Sustainability said "Together we continue to innovate and redefine sustainable mobility, ensuring we maintain our position as the world’s most sustainable sport.” She also said: "This initial pilot of transporting all team and championship freight via SAF is at the cutting edge in world motorsport and never been done before by a series from race to race, so we’re incredibly proud to have achieved this already. It is a first of its kind. SAF is a great mechanism to reduce our freight and overall CO2 emissions". ⛽ Despite making up a minimal percentage (0.1%) of total jet fuel currently in use, there are reasons to be wary of an over-reliance on SAF. Finlay Asher says: “SAF is very much a delaying tactic by the fossil fuel industry and the aviation industry,” noting that the only way to truly curb emissions from aviation is to decrease air travel demand. He reckons that the best way to do this is to use carbon pricing and create carbon budgets that disincentivize routine travel and long-haul travel. 🗣️ Camille Mutrelle, Aviation Policy Officer at Transport & Environment (T&E) agrees. She says “The most feasible way to approach net-zero is curbing demand.” She added, “One significant lever is cutting business travel demand,” 👉 Read our detailed position on "SAF" which we prefer to call "Alternative Jet Fuel" here: https://lnkd.in/exadis3J #SustainableAviation #SustainableAviationFuel #Sustainability #AirTravel #FormulaE #Motorsport #Race #Industry
