𝙁1 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙨. 𝗢𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗙1 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗚𝗣 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱? I've been following SailGP more closely over the past couple of years. It's an impressive blend of aerodynamics and glamour all powered by nature. And the growth has been phenomenal. SailGP grew from six teams and five events to ten teams and 12 events this season. Next year at least nine of the 11 teams will be funded from the outside. The sport of sailing, except for the America's Cup regatta, has long been dismissed as a sporting property with commercial viability. But SailGP has top-tier partners, including ROLEX, Mudabala, Oracle, and Near. This has boosted the sport's exposure, notoriety, and fan following over four seasons. The stadium-style, high-speed format is a made-for-livestream sports property now reportedly broadcast in more than 200 markets. And it's unique in the fact that race attendees can see the entire course, unlike motorsports where you see cars/bikes go by once every couple of minutes. And the series will continue to grow. The recent New York event follows closely after Mubadala Capital's announcement of their plans to purchase a newly established SailGP team representing Brazil. This team, known as the Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team, will be the 11th team in the league in 2025. Furthermore, SailGP's expansion is not limited to Brazil, as Italy has also been granted a franchise by the league. Do you have a SailGP event on your to-do list? It’s that time of year again for media to question the taxpayer value of the the F1 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. According to the 2023 AGPC Annual Report Vic Gov’t invested $100.6m with an estimated total economic impact of $268m (EY, 2023 DJSIR Report). Looking beyond the economic impact report other benefits should also be considered: 1. Social impact - during Covid we experienced what life looked like without major events. Major events unite people, strengthen the community and instill a sense of pride for Victorians 2. Brand exposure - broadcast live in nearly every country in the world to millions of people provides significant brand exposure for Melbourne and Victoria. Add to that the exposure received via Drive to Survive. 3. Flow on tourism and economic benefit - exposure and awareness generated from above and positive experiences for the 81,000 interstate and international travellers (2023) puts Vic and Melb top of mind for future travel 4. Benefits to other Motorsports - our data shows that passion for F1 has had a direct positive impact on other Aust. 📍How resilient Teams change adversity Kicking of Tuesday with a great example of how resilience and team commitment create a different outcome under adverse circumstances. Team New Zealand are the current defenders of the Americas Cup, winning it racing on the waters near my mum and dads home a few years back. As the defenders they automatically qualify for the finals. Their boat a 75-footer named ‘Taihoro’ is fast and they are the team to beat. Last week when Taihoro was being removed from the water after racing, the crane broke dropping the boat some six metres onto the support cradle. Significantly damaging its hull. I tuned in to watch the upcoming race only to learn that team New Zealand were not sure how bad the damage was and facing the devastating possibility that they may not be able to participate in defending the cup! Less than 24 hours later, enough work had been done overnight to give hope they could be back on the water sooner than expected. The Kiwis' shore crew worked around the clock to cut out and replace a piece of the hull. Words from the boatbuilders and shore crew: ”We will get this boat back on the water and racing again.” “We have to get the boat sailing as soon as possible.” 💡41 hours later Taihoro is back on the water sailing! What I love about this story is the use of the words We! There was no hesitation by the team. Under these difficult circumstances, they rallied together. Their commitment and collaboration to see this boat back on the water and their resilience significantly altered the outcome. Through major transformations and change we are often confronted with adversity and circumstances that seem like an impossible hurdle. Our greatest assets is our people and our teams ability to rise up collectively, bringing the best of skills and talent together.
