🎓Reflecting on my graduation - 2 years of growth🎓
Today marks two years since I graduated, and looking back, it feels like such a whirlwind of emotions. On the day, I was filled with excitement but also nerves, not just because of the ceremony itself, but because I wanted to show my daughter that anything is possible. Being a young mum at 20, balancing the demands of full-time work, and raising three children—one of them a baby at the time—was no easy feat. But I was determined to make it happen.
The journey wasn’t without its challenges. Managing a household while pursuing a degree, working full time and dealing with my mental health challenges required resilience and time management on a level I hadn’t expected. But I pushed through, and I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come since then.
In the two years since graduation, I’ve had the opportunity to work with Balfour Beatty plc where I’ve completed their Early Careers Programme and taken on the role of Assistant Business Manager. It’s been a period of immense personal and professional growth, thanks to the fantastic people I’ve met and the supportive environment I’ve found myself in. I’ve had experiences that pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me develop new skills, all while balancing the responsibilities of being a mother and a wife.
Reflecting on what’s been most valuable, I’d say preparation, being resourceful, persistence and networking have been the keys to my progress. Those lessons were crucial during my studies and have continued to guide me in my career.
If I could offer advice to my younger self or to anyone graduating soon, it would be this: Take what you learn and apply it. Put yourself in environments that will nurture and support your growth, and most importantly, have confidence in your abilities. Networking is crucial—be visible, make connections, and keep pushing forward.
