🚨 ATTN Cleveland-Area Engineers, Architects, and Facilities Managers—I need your help! 🚨 I’d like to start a Cleveland chapter of the BIG - Building Intelligence Group . Not familiar with BIG? The Building Intelligence Group (BIG) is a cross disciplinary education, support, and networking organization dedicated to delivering data-driven solutions to maximize value for everyone that interacts with the built environment. The catch? I need 5-10 professionals that currently work in the smart building space to join me on BIG CLE’s Steering Committee. We will meet virtually to follow the 30-60-90-day Action Plan for starting a local chapter. The Steering Committee will decide on the local chapter structure, meeting cadence and location, meeting topics, and other ideas to attract members. More and more BIG chapters are popping up across the country, so this is a great opportunity to get involved with a rapidly growing industry organization. Especially good for remote workers or those in the early phase of their career, getting involved and starting a local BIG chapter provides a unique opportunity to build leadership skills, network with others in the industry, and make valuable connections. The rise of Industrialized Construction marks a pivotal shift towards a manufacturing mindset, impacting every level of construction companies' organizational structure. We’ve identified key roles within this transformation for fabrication and construction manufacturing. Which of these roles do you currently hold? After gaining tremendous experience in architectural firms, I became more interested in the development process as a whole from conception to completion. I was fortunate to land at Baker, where that was realized since day one. I am proud to help build and maintain strong relationships with high-quality design and construction teams for our projects.  Q: What is one piece of advice you’d offer someone looking to get into development and construction management today?   A: Development is very dynamic and there are a lot of different roles that rely on each other. I absolutely loved this article featuring Devin Koopman -- specifically this section on the construction industry. How do you see the industry evolving in the near future and what can Perlo do to adapt to these changes? The trending term is “aging workforce,” and you’ll hear it over and over again because it’s vitally important to the future of our industry. We need young people to get involved, and that means we, as an industry, need to foster the next wave of workers and leaders. For us, this requires getting out there, talking to students, and changing the dialogue around skilled-trades and construction in general. I love the saying, “Train someone to be better than yourself.” You must be comfortable and confident to not be threatened by this. Technology is also changing at a rapid pace. How we build will change, and we have to trust the next generation to learn these skills and carry the torch. Sundt Construction has been around for over 120 years. In that time, the company's grown to about 3,000 employees and does $3 billion in revenue annually. Eric Cylwik, Director of Innovation at Sundt, was gracious enough to sit down with our interview team at the recent Construction Tech Conference to talk innovation. "There's a few different aspects of innovation at a construction company, because construction companies take something that is fully conceptual, drawn on paper, and bring it into the real world," Cylwik says. "Part of the difficulty is aligning the right resources around the right problems. Staying really close to the problem is so important in our industry."
