The lack of affordable, high-quality child care affects nearly every Washington community. An estimated 63% of children across the state live in areas with inadequate child care. Commerce is working to support public-private partnerships to help communities address their unique child care needs, and today we announced over $2 million to 18 local organizations. The two-year Child Care Partnership planning grants are co-funded by Ballmer Group and the Bezos Family Foundation. Since the Child Care Partnership program was launched in 2020, grants have supported 41 community partnerships in 28 counties with $4.7 million in planning assistance. Many projects have used the funding to prepare for and meet prerequisites for capital funding, including Commerce’s Early Learning Facilities program. Read more: https://bit.ly/48aNULl

This is an excellent piece by one of our philanthropic funders, Overdeck Family Foundation. At ParentCorps, we know how powerful the home-school connection is. Our approach holds family engagement at its center, and rigorous evaluations of ParentCorps have found that this model positively impacts children’s academic success as well as their mental and physical health for years to come. “Helping a parent or caregiver play a role in their child’s education is not something that only the best teachers can do because they instinctively know how,” the authors write. “It is a series of activities and actions, such as home visits, literacy programs, and teacher-parent communication tools, that administrators invest in, and educators buy into, year-round. “Rise Up SF” Education Program to Support Children Facing Hardship The goal is to provide educational support for under-supported children in San Francisco to give them confidence and hope, and to help lift them up to better lives. (San Francisco) – Urban Angels SF is proud to launch its educational support program, Rise Up SF, benefitting children from families experiencing homelessness or living at the poverty level in San Francisco. Nearly half of the students in the City are not reading proficient, and 1 in 24 students come from families who do not have a steady, safe, and secure place to live. Phase one of the program is to provide high-impact one-on-one tutoring in reading to 100 K through 4th grade children. “Research shows that it is vitally important that they be reading-proficient by the time they finish 4th grade because if they aren’t, they may never catch up,” says Nelson Barry, Founder and President of Urban Angels SF. “Getting children to read at grade level helps them with comprehension in other subjects, boosts their confidence, reduces absenteeism, and improves emotional behavior in the classroom,” Barry added. Three groups of children are most vulnerable to falling behind in reading; those from homeless families, those from families that are traditionally underserved (black and brown), and those from families where English is a secondary language. The vast majority of children served by UASF meet all three of these criteria! Headquartered in Diamond Heights since 2015, Urban Angels SF relies on 50+ volunteers and caring donors to fulfill its mission of providing frontline aid to San Francisco men, women, and children. “Rise Up SF” is the latest addition to the organization’s mission. Out of all the causes I care about, children hold a special place in my heart, and here's why. There's something about their innocence, curiosity, and resilience that inspire me to do everything I can to support them and I believe that supporting children - both boys and girls - is crucial for building a better future for our world. On this Children's Day, I need to remind you that these children you see are the future leaders, innovators, and change-makers of our world. They have the potential to bring about positive change and make a significant impact. However, many children worldwide lack access to basic necessities like education, healthcare, and safety, hindering their growth and development, and ultimately affecting us all. So, what can we do today to support children worldwide? We can: • Donate to organizations providing educational resources and support to underprivileged children • Volunteer at local schools or organizations working with children • Advocate for policies prioritizing children's education and well-being • Mentor a child or young person in our community Whether you're a parent, educator, or simply someone who cares, every effort counts. 🎉 Big News from the Student Basic Needs Coalition! 🎉 We’re excited to share that SBNC has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Annie E. Casey Foundation. This grant will enable us to expand our peer navigator program to more community colleges, helping thousands of students gain access to SNAP benefits and tackle food insecurity. Community colleges are a vital gateway to education for students from low-income backgrounds, yet many eligible students still face barriers to receiving SNAP benefits. The SNAP gap—where students miss out on benefits they’re entitled to—can have serious consequences, from increased stress to lower academic performance. Thanks to this generous grant, we’re expanding our peer navigator program, where student leaders with lived experience guide their peers through the SNAP application process. These peer navigators play a critical role in reducing stigma and making the process more accessible. We’re also creating a new full-time Campus Program Manager role to oversee these efforts and ensure more students get the support they need. This initiative is about more than just increasing SNAP enrollment—it’s about creating a sustainable model that can be replicated across other schools, amplifying our impact.
