Yes Simon Westaway I watched the Flight Club 4 Corners programme. Great viewing and great to see Brett Godfrey and his thoughts on the collapse of Rex and Bonza. I always thought the story of Brett and Sir Richard Branson doing the business plan for Virgin Blue on the back of beer coasters in a London pub was an urban myth. I heard that story many years ago from people that worked with Brett setting up Virgin Blue. But no Brett even mentioned that in his interview. The only thing I disagree with though from the 4 Corners story is that the alleged uncompetitive behaviour and market dominance of Qantas was the cause of Rex and Bonza to collapse. Airlines collapse when they are not profitable and making money. They run out of cash to pay the bills - they start “bleeding money”. There is no uncompetitive behaviour in the Australian aviation market. Qantas as well at Virgin are not doing anything wrong. They are competing on the same leave playing field and have great financial management practices to survive in the least profitable industry in the world. I’m sure the regulatory authorities ACCC/ASIC are keeping an eye on all airlines. Qantas and Jetstar are a great business model and should be appalled for their success and the leadership Alan Joyce gave to both airlines. I personally worked with Alan and Rohan his Head of People when he was CEO of Jetstar. Way back when Jetstar was born. Our company supplied a lot on AME LAME and other support staff to ensure Jetstar was a truely competitive LCC. Even Brett Godfrey gave an example of fair competition in his interview - “When Virgin had $79 airfares if Qantas matched these fares, they would be loosing $2M per day”. Qantas didn’t complain about unfair competition. Qantas started up Jetstar to compete with Virgin. And Brett said - “The duopoly in Australia works. As long as they keep innovating the product and it is the right financial fit”. Australia doesn’t have the population to support more airlines. Simple fact. My final comment is that Four Corners didn’t touch on the real reason airlines fail. I’ll refer everyone to a great book I purchased about 15 years ago and is one of my trusted reference guides to doing business in aviation. The book is Flightpaths - Exposing the myths about airlines and airfares. Written by Geoffrey Thomas and Christine Forbes Smith. Go to Chapter 14 - Dollars and Sense of Airlines. And you will see a quote - These days no one can make money on the goddamn airline business. The economics represent sheer hell. - C.R. Smith, President of American Airlines. I’ll let people find the book and read it for themselves. But will leave you all with this last quote from Geoffrey Thomas “It may be hard to believe but the airline industry is actually the world’s least profitable industry. The industry’s best year was in 1966, when it made a 6.1% net profit, but in the past 30 years, most airline balance sheets have revealed losses of about 1.5%”.

The ABC may be much maligned in the eyes of an increasing number of Australians (lower ratings, lessening trust & generally fewer eyeballs & ears) across its many markets it attests to reach. The just 8c a day per taxpayer positioning from an era well bygone. But the perennial #FourCorners at ‘our’ Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) still delivers a series of top shelf stories each year. ‘Flight Club’ sits comfortably on it. Anyone with even a passing interest in Australian aviation, to regional affairs, transport policy or through to the consumer will get something out of this. Job well done. It included a nice history lesson, (look out for the 5-seconds on Impulse Airlines), some good old fashioned investigative journalism from the other side of the world, a first time on-the-record corporate stoush & stand-off interview(s), to the strength of insight from the likes of Brett Godfrey & Joe Aston. The regional story lines were also particularly strong. Not to say you’ll agree with all of it but really worth the 📺watch. #aviation #airlines #ausbiz #auspol #travel #rex #qantas #virginaustralia #bonza #accc #competition #corporate #australia #regionalaustralia #airports Watching Series 2024 Flight Club in iview https://lnkd.in/gv2M5gTC
