The Business of Sports in Africa + the Middle East

This is the coolest event I’ve heard about in a long time… 🏎️Kicking off it’s 3rd season, the Rally Jameel began today. It is Saudi Arabia's groundbreaking off-road navigation rally exclusively for female drivers, marking a significant milestone in the country's progress since lifting the driving ban on women in 2017. Here’s what I’ve learned. ↓ ▷HOW IT WORKS This event is not about speed but about navigation and precision driving. • 👯♀️Teams of two women (a driver and co-driver) utilize cutting-edge navigation equipment, a digital road book, and compasses to compete along a predetermined route through Hail, AlUla, Umluj, Yanbu, and King Abdullah Economic City in Rabigh. • The entire race spans 1600km across the desert and includes five stages of between 300 and 500km per day, only revealed to the drivers the night before each stage. • Driving unmodified off-road vehicles, they will navigate through hidden waypoints to gather points, and the team that finishes with the highest number of points wins. ↓ ▷ORGANIZERS AND IMPACT In line with the Kingdom’s transformational Vision 2030, AbduL Latif Jameel Motors, the authorized distributor of Toyota Motor Corporation in Saudi Arabia, announced and organized Rally Jameel as a pioneering initiative for women's motorsports with its inaugural event taking place in 2022. Hassan Jameel, Deputy President and Vice Chairman of Abdul Latif Jameel said, “…we are committed to nurturing local talent and accelerating women’s participation in sports – particularly motorsports…Rally Jameel is a testament to Saudi Arabia’s historic transformation and the opportunities that can be found in the country.” 🌍 A shining success, this year’s event has ballooned and features 108 drivers from 38 countries, up from 82 drivers from 25 countries in last year’s edition and 34 drivers from 15 countries in its inaugural year. ↓ Im not going to lie, this sounds like so much fun. Where is Netflix to make this into a series?! We love seeing Females in Motorsport👌🏿 For more news and analysis on the emerging sports economies of Africa and the Middle East, check out Playbook - Sports Business for Emerging Markets. __________ Photo: Rally Jameel #linkedinsports  #sportsbusiness  #rallyjameel #womeninmotorsports #internationalwomensday

Amazing! Especially given that Saudi women were only granted the right to drive a car in 2018…
