More Job Flow Doesn’t Always Mean More Cashflow Many recruitment business owners feel the pressure to accept every job that comes their way, believing that more job flow means more money flow. But that’s not always the case. Let me share a story to illustrate this: Imagine a top French restaurant in London. A regular customer calls to reserve a table and says, "I'd like to come in for Chinese." The maître d' responds, "We specialise in French cuisine, but we'll find a way to accommodate you." Shortly after, another call comes in, "I want to eat Indian tonight." The maître d' again says, "No problem, we'll make space for you." Now, the restaurant is packed. The chef and staff are scrambling to prepare dishes they're not equipped to make. Customers are waiting, complaining, and leaving dissatisfied. VIP guests wanting French cuisine are turned away, the staff is overwhelmed, and the restaurant’s reputation takes a hit. Sound crazy? Yet, this happens in recruitment businesses all the time. Taking on every job, regardless of whether it fits your speciality, can lead to burnout, lost revenue, and a damaged reputation. When you understand the true value of your niche services and have systems in place for high-value placements, saying “yes” to the right jobs becomes second nature. Picture this... You're stood at the bar... Ordering a nice cold beer🍺 But the Waitress/Waiter doesn't bring your drink over... But you notice them taking other drinks to other tables... When they turned up after you! 😠 You'd have to go and find out what's going on! The Waitress/Waiter tells you that these people paid more for their drinks... So this is why they received the faster service 😲 That's not right! So why do so many people think this is ok with recruitment? ❌ So many companies miss out on great candidates... Because there are other businesses that will pay a higher % placement fee... Which means they'll get sent the CV's first so they can pick their favourite 🤩 That means that all of the business who can't pay as much... Get put to the bottom of the queue... "Recruiters only care about filling the role." NOT TRUE. While securing placements is necessary, it's far from our sole focus. Claiming recruiters only care about filling roles is like saying a restaurant is only concerned about the bill, not the quality of the dining experience they provide. Much like a restaurant aims to impress diners throughout their visit so customers are more likely to come back – we too are committed to a long-term approach. We aim to make long-lasting impressions throughout the process which resonate with both clients AND candidates to foster long-term partnerships. As with any business, managing the hiring process effectively is what brings us future business. There were 866,000 accommodation and foodservices job openings in June, bouncing back from the 746,000 seen in May, which was the weakest reading since January 2021. Despite the uptick in the latest data, job postings in the accommodation and foodservices sector have cooled notably over the past year and a half, with the overall level normalizing dramatically from post-pandemic record highs.   Over the past three months, job openings in the sector have averaged 843,000, which is not far from the average seen in the 2017–2019 period (835,000). As such, job openings in the sector have essentially returned to pre-pandemic levels.   Meanwhile, accommodation and food services businesses hired just 678,000 workers in June, down from 789,000 in May and the weakest reading since April 2020. (Excluding the pandemic, it was the slowest hiring level since December 2014.) At the same time, there were 711,000 total separations in the sector in June, down from 771,000 in May and the lowest reading since October 2020. As such, labor market activity in the sector was challenged in June, with net hiring (or hires minus separations) of -33,000 for the month. Now that you have committed to the constant search for your ideal employee, let's look at the next step. Refreshing and Refining your Ads. First, what should the ad do? It needs to attract the right people and deter those who are not suited for your operation because you do not want to waste precious time with unsuitable applicants. But how...? 1. Provide a detailed job description with clear expectations. 2. Provide a list of qualifications and keep in mind that some qualifications can be trained into an employee... skills are more easily taught than values! I can teach someone how to use a knife in the kitchen, but I likely cannot teach them how to have integrity. 3. Express your core values... you are trying to attract people of similar quality. Letting them know who you are will also let them know how you operate your business. 4. Include a pay range: Speaking for hiring in the restaurant industry... let them know the pay range of the position. Face it, those who are looking to work in restaurants are usually driven by what that paycheck is going to look like. Providing the pay range ensures that anyone applying has already accepted that aspect of the job and you won't have to field emails or calls asking what the job pays. 5. Be creative: having images of staff having fun with each other or with guests/clients, shows the kind of environment new staff are stepping into. Testimonials from current or past employees can provide insight for those interested in coming aboard.
