With growing environmental concerns and the need to reduce plastic pollution, recycling plastics has become a key focus in sustainability efforts. The process typically involves collecting, sorting, cleaning, and reprocessing plastic waste into raw materials that can be used to manufacture a wide range of items, such as packaging, textiles, and construction materials. Recycled plastics offer several environmental benefits, including reducing the demand for virgin plastic, conserving resources, and lowering greenhouse gas emissions associated with plastic production. Commonly recycled plastics include PET (used in bottles) and HDPE (used in containers), among others. However, challenges like contamination and the limited recyclability of certain plastics still exist. As industries and consumers increasingly embrace sustainable practices, innovations in recycling technologies and circular economy initiatives are expected to drive further growth in the use of recycled plastics. With the increasing consumption of plastic products, the environmental burden has grown, leading to severe pollution in oceans, landfills, and natural ecosystems. Recycling plastic helps mitigate these issues by reducing the need for virgin plastic production, conserving natural resources, and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. The process involves collecting and processing discarded plastic items, such as bottles, containers, and packaging, which are then sorted, cleaned, and reprocessed into new products. This circular economy approach not only decreases the volume of plastic waste but also contributes to energy savings and reduced environmental impact, as producing recycled plastic generally requires less energy than manufacturing new plastic from raw materials. One of the primary obstacles is the complex and diverse nature of plastic types, which often necessitates sophisticated sorting and processing technologies. Contamination of recyclable plastics, such as food residues and non-recyclable materials, further complicates the recycling process, leading to lower quality recycled products. Additionally, the economics of recycling can be unfavorable, as the cost of collecting and processing plastic waste sometimes exceeds the value of the recycled material. Despite these challenges, advancements in recycling technologies and growing consumer awareness are driving improvements in the efficiency and profitability of plastic recycling. Governments and industries worldwide are also implementing stricter regulations and incentives to promote recycling, making it a critical component of sustainable waste management strategies. Some interesting statistics: We are currently producing about 500 million tons of plastic per year globally, estimated to double by 2030, and treble by 2050 One Corsair modular pyrolysis facility can recycle 12 million kgs of plastic waste into Advanced Bio-oil every year From every 10 kgs of plastic waste recycled, 9 litres of Advanced Bio-oil is produced Advanced Bio-oil is used to manufacture new plastic products, which in turn can be recycled an infinite number of times Advanced Bio-oil currently sells at €1 per litre For every kilo of plastic recycled, 10 CSR Plastic Credits are distributed, for companies to offset their own plastic footprint Each kilo of plastic waste currently costs around €0.18 to offset. Consumers are prepared to pay up to 20% more for products from sustainable companies, according to recent studies The global market for Advanced Bio-oil is estimated at 100 Billion litres by 2030 For every litre of Advanced Bio-oil we produce, one litre of virgin fossil oil stays in the ground - no need for arctic or deep ocean drilling, no need for fracking Do the maths We need to build as many recycling facilities as we can, as quickly as we can, to build a global circular economy for plastic.
