But the deeper I looked, the clearer it became that recycled content is just one piece of a much bigger puzzle. That’s when I discovered Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), the game-changers for truly understanding a product’s impact. LCAs go way beyond the “recycled” label, assessing every stage—from material extraction to end-of-life disposal. The Australian Government’s Circular Economy Framework has just launched! With the built environment as a key priority, here's the main takeaways to be considering: 3 Headline Targets: 🎯Reduce material footprint per capita by 10%: Decrease the amount of raw materials consumed to produce goods and services used in Australia. 🎯Increase material productivity by 30%: Generate more economic output from the same amount or less material input. 🎯Safely recover 80% of resources by 2030: Increase the proportion of materials diverted from landfill and reused, recycled, or repurposed. Built Environment Key Strategies: 🏗️Refurbishment and adaptive reuse: Extending the lifespan of existing buildings through renovation and repurposing. 🏗️Circular, low-carbon construction materials: Using recycled and sustainably sourced materials in new construction. Interesting read: Over the last decade, the concept of the circular economy (CE) has gained significant traction across the industries as a means to address global challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity, and waste generation.
