The higher the ratio of Solar : DC capacity (the more solar you have, relative to the size of the Edge instance) - the greater your competitive price advantage..... This is pretty much the only thing any data centre operator now needs to worry about. How much solar can you access behind the meter? How much storage can you land? Can you trade out the delta?

What has been happening over the past few months in California – with battery storage pushing out gas as the major provider of power into the evening peaks, and soaking up rooftop solar in the middle of the day – is seen as a postcard for the future for many grids around the world.. It is of particular interest to Australia, which has also been investing heavily in battery storage – and leading the world in terms of battery size and applications – and which is also rich in solar resources and solar installations.

California batteries discharge >5,000 MW at peak times in April! This revealing graph and story, prepared by the stellar team at Grid Status, shows how battery operations have greatly expanded throughout the day in California ISO. In April, batteries discharged over 5,000 megawatts (MW) at peak times – a 100% increase over the average in 2023. In fact, according to Grid Status’s Record Tracker App, a new record for battery discharge was set last night (May 7) at 9:30 PM at 7,196 MW, and just six days ago, on May 2 at 2:20 PM, solar accounted for a record 18,538 MW. U.S. scientists build hybrid energy system integrating PV, radiative cooling: The hybrid system has a cooling power of 63.8 W/m2 and a photovoltaic power output of 159.9 W/m2.
