🎯✅ Are you ready to set science-based targets for nature? Forward-thinking companies are. One pilot company reported that the targets are "credible, robust, logical and prescriptive" – so what are you waiting for? 👇 In May 2023 a target validation pilot commenced with a group of companies that were required to prepare and submit freshwater and land targets for validation, in alignment with the previous version (2023) of SBTN’s methods.🌊⛰️ The scope of the pilot validation included the following steps: Step 1️⃣: Assess – an integrated assessment method to identify key issues and locations to focus on for target setting. Step 2️⃣: Interpret and Prioritize – a method for prioritization of target setting, using a mix of environmental, social, and financial considerations. Step 3️⃣: Measure, Set, Disclosure – methods for setting land and freshwater targets, addressing some of the dominant drivers of biodiversity loss and climate change. The pilot concluded in June 2024, and our summary report provides an overview of the pilot itself, with initial learnings, key benefits and insights into best practices shared by the group of forward-thinking companies. 📝 🔗 Read the pilot summary report: https://lnkd.in/eQ-H9ndV ➡️ Learn more about setting science-based targets for nature in our corporate target-setting guide: https://lnkd.in/dCPqXV76 We are deeply grateful to our piloting companies, supporting consultancies and NGO partners for their participation in the first year of setting corporate science-based targets for nature. Looking ahead, we look forward to sharing full outcomes and strategic insights beginning in September 2024, as well as highlighting piloting companies’ experiences.🌱 #ScienceBasedTargets #ForNature #SBTN #NaturePositive #SafeAndJust #ScienceBased #NatureAndClimate #EcologicalEmergency #GlobalCommons

Very interesting article on what the nature target-setting corporations have done one year after making their commitments. The challenges are the same, regardless of your business size or sector 🌳supply chain visibility 🌳access to data 🌳in-house capabilities It’s progress and all directionally correct. We just need more organisations engaging, learning and sharing on both global and national levels. The transition to #NaturePositive will be a succession of small incremental changes and continuous improvement. We know it won’t happen overnight. #bizbioirl #joinTheEvolution
Pioneering companies representing sectors and supply chains significantly impacting nature have been on a unique journey since May 2023, to pilot the first-ever science-based targets for nature. 👇 Peter Vanham at Fortune interviews Erin Billman to summarize four key initial insights from these companies, which were gathered during the ongoing pilot through a combination of workshops, interviews and anonymized surveys: 🚀 As companies move through the target-setting process, they tend to raise their nature ambitions. For example, one company realized that forests are just one of several ecosystems that it affected - so it should also address how it is negatively impact others, like peatlands. 🔎 Companies reported that setting science-based targets for nature leads to measurable benefits including uncovering hidden risk in their value chain. Erin Billman said this comes down to improved understanding of their value chain impacts on nature, which requires companies to "increase their upstream traceability, working more closely with their suppliers". ⚖️ The process requires balancing rigor and feasibility, as Erin Billman explained: “To change the status quo, things have to be done differently, but we have to meet leading companies where they’re at.” 🛠️ This work demands specific, often highly technical skills that should be developed in-house or tapped external resources like NGOs or consultants. One company chose to build capability in-house and leverage partners to check their work. A-Track is a new four-year, €11 million project that will accelerate action for nature by business, financial institutions and government. A-Track is working with leading thought leaders and practitioners who have been driving change in the measurement and valuation of natural capital and biodiversity. Existing tools and approaches are being brought together and developed further to enable businesses, financial intuitions, and governments to accelerate action for nature. As a partner in A-Track, we are looking forward to working with the consortium to accelerate the use of natural capital approaches in decision making across Europe. Our role in the consortium includes developing biodiversity information pathways. Our aim is to demonstrate how the combination of private and public sector information can be used to support decision making and the use of various applications at corporate and government levels. We are looking forward to collaborating with the Capitals Coalition, VITO, TECNALIA Research & Innovation, Oppla, UNEP-WCMC, University of Stuttgart, Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), ICAEW and the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development. ✅ Having an independent validation partner is "crucial for maintaining the credibility and integrity of #ScienceBasedTargets #ForNature". Read more in GreenBiz 👇 In a recent GreenBiz Group article, Heather Clancy writes about the news that the GCA Accountability Accelerator (GCA AA) will host the new validation services. She speaks to Simon Gillet, a senior sustainability consultant with strategy firm Quantis who explains #SBTN's selection of an independent validation partner is important for maintaining credibility. He says: "It ensures that the targets are based on rigorous scientific standards and unbiased reviews, fostering trust among stakeholders, investors and the public." 🔗 Read the article in full: https://lnkd.in/evCkijW5 GCA AA will evaluate each company's proposed targets through an expert review process involving internal and external validators. ➡️ Read more about the new validation host: https://lnkd.in/ejNhDd8d #NaturePositive #SafeAndJust #ScienceBased #NatureAndClimate #EcologicalEmergency #GlobalCommons

Last week it was a real privilege to be part of so many forward-looking conversations at #IFscope3EU with experienced and committed practitioners to discuss progress on #naturestrategiesforimpact #EUDR and #regenerativeagriculture thank you Tilmann Silber Karla Canavan Marie-Claire Franzen-Aerts Christopher Stewart Hugo Stuurman @andreeitner Geza Toth, Ph.D. and kudos to team Innovation Forum and @natashabodnar . Too many gems to share here but some of those that have stayed with me: - Growing recognition that becoming net zero is impossible without becoming nature positive. As companies prepare for implementing the EUDR by the end of this year, investing heavily in traceability and re-organising supply-chains and logistics, we must also work hard to guard against unintended consequences. - Companies can lean into driving systems change by better leveraging their multiple spheres of influence: direct operations, supply-chains, landscapes, systems, governance/ transparency. - There is no shame in learning from failure! In fact it is usually the most effective kind of lesson-learning we can do, if we have the humility honesty and courage. - Understanding how National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans aligned with the GBF ladder-up to something meaningful and measurable at the corporate/global level will be essential. - Trade-offs are never a very appealing topic but we must get real about the challenges especially in the short-term, and how in the longer term regen ag is essential for both mitigation and adaptation #naturepositiveagriculture

Scoop 3 offers a lot of opportunities for real deal energy, efficiency, work, and a much more accurate picture on carbon reductions. Including scoop 3 will disrupt and upset many current carbon and energy efficiency programs. I would expect resistance from the status quo and many of today’s players we need to ensure this field remains open to more innovative, effective and systems, thinking based players to enter.
Changes afoot for the Science Based Targets initiative. Thanks to Luiz Fernando do Amaral for talking them through with me. This will be a turning point year, for sure. For those keeping score (like me), here are some of the evolutions you can expect this year. - A review of the corporate net-zero standard, with an eye to potential revisions during 2025. - The formation of an independent Validation Council to strengthen the credibility of that process. - Closer partnerships with other standards-setting organizations to improve integration with other frameworks, notably those for developing strategies for nature and biodiversity. - More sector-specific standards Read more details here: https://bityl.co/O0n0 Have thoughts on how your company's science-based targets journey is evolving? 🍃 Are you aware of our impact on nature? Our #NatureBenchmark2023 results so far show us that, despite a few companies leading some action, there is still a long way to go to stop and reverse #biodiversityloss. 📊 The 2022 and 2023 Nature Benchmarks show that at the moment, most companies do not understand and disclose how they affect and rely on nature. Less than 1% of the companies assessed holistically assess and disclose their dependencies on nature, and less than 5% are doing this for their impacts on nature. 🔍 In response to the findings, we have formed a Nature Collective Impact Coalition (CIC), which will focus on improving companies’ assessments and disclosure of their impacts and dependencies on nature. You can be a part of creating the change that is needed! Find out more about the engagement campaign and how to join, in the link below ⤵ https://lnkd.in/dwtrxcWn #NatureBenchmark2023 #biodiversityloss #disclosure
