This week I celebrated my 5 year anniversary at R2R Global and naturally it gave me a chance to reflect on my time in the world of recruitment to recruitment. In our Monday morning sales meeting our Global MD Matthew Gostelow asked me for one piece of advice that I’d give our team after 5 years in the business and nearly 10 years in the industry as a whole. There are more than a few lessons I can share and endless war stories but the biggest piece of advice I would give someone starting out in the recruitment industry is to never be afraid of feeling uncomfortable! Embrace it. Take on scary new challenges because that’s when you grow the most both professionally and personally. I joined R2R right at the start as the firm’s third hire and I’ve watched the business grow into a team of 30 placing candidates all around the world. I spearheaded the launch and growth of a brand new business in R2R NYC, built multiple practices from scratch on both sides of the Atlantic and have trained and developed teams of exceptional people. Every time I’ve tried something new, there’s always been that feeling of anxiety and nervousness that comes with taking on any big challenge. But what I can say is it’s been an incredible journey over the last 5 years. We’ve never shied away from taking risks and definitely haven’t stayed within our comfort zone! And whilst there’s always going to be ups and downs, I’m so glad we’ve taken those risks because we wouldn’t be where we are today without doing so. So that’s my one piece of advice after a decade in the industry – get comfortable feeling uncomfortable!

Today we celebrated two team members 10 year anniversaries. While the trend of job hopping may seem appealing on the surface, it's crucial to recognize the immense value that long-serving employees bring to the table. When I made my first placement back in 2020, Rob Paone and I hopped on Zoom to celebrate with a glass of Whiskey. 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮 𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆; 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗱." 𝗙𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: "Man, it's really sweet to watch them improve. Achieving success in recruiting is one thing, and don't get me wrong, that's awesome to watch, but 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝘀, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄? Rob and I had never started a company before. 𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁, '𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁,' as they say... ... Every day, there was something (new), and every day, we had to adapt, adjust, and keep going. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲." Feel-good stories are my weakness. Here’s one that made me feel great. An employee resigns within less then a year of being with us. He felt the role was too complex, not for him and he was unable to give back. A week before his last day he revokes his resignation. Curious, I asked him “What changed?”. “We celebrated my first year anniversary last week.” , he said. (Pause) “My manager and team members called out all I had done during the year. And I realized, I can do this.” I loved when he said, “I am here to stay.” (still smiling ear to ear as I write this post) 3 things we did right - 1. We celebrated the employee in year 1 2. We celebrated the employee even during notice period 3. We celebrated efforts and not just results Celebrating a work anniversary calls for going beyond just handing out a certificate or trophy. Research shows that employees stay at organizations for 2–4 years more when their company has a strong service awards program that celebrates employee tenure in meaningful ways. Dear Team, As we celebrate our 13th anniversary, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone for creating this brand from scratch. Some individuals enjoy working with reputable brands, while others prefer to establish their own identity in building outstanding brand. I am privileged to work with people who are passionate about building a brand together. I learned numerous lessons over the past 13 years and continuing. I wish to share my learnings of resignation and termination. One of the primary causes for resignations occurs when an organization fails to keep pace with an individual's professional development and evolving needs. One significant factor contributing to terminations is when an individual is unable to meet the organization's evolving growth expectations and advanced requirements. When we address both issues, I wish for our team members not to work tirelessly, but rather to derive insightful lessons from nature to excel as exceptional individuals. Madre needs to explore the full potential of our team members. We are not in the business of being one step ahead of someone else. We are in the business of establishing industry benchmarks.

May marked my 9-year anniversary at Pluralsight. You may know that, during this time, I took a leap in my career by moving from business strategy to People. A pivot into HR wasn't a move I saw myself making, but after almost a decade with the company and 6 years in people management, I've learned a few things: 👉 Embrace the unknown; stepping out of your comfort zone fosters growth. 👉 Being able to adapt is an underrated skill and will always set you up for success. 👉 Cultivating an ownership attitude empowers you to add value in any circumstance.
