In June, our CEO, Corporate Leadership Team and Members of our Board visited North Glasgow to see our partnership working in action. SEPA works with the Metropolitan Glasgow Strategic Drainage Partnership (MGSDP) to help sustainably drain the Glasgow city region and manage surface water, water quality and flood risk. Projects like these demonstrate how a collaborative approach can help implement resilient infrastructure while providing green spaces for local communities to enjoy. The right project in the right place at the right time. Welcoming planning approval for the Belmont Desalination Plant. This State Significant Infrastructure was prioritised in Hunter Water's 2022 Lower Hunter Water Security Plan, informed by comprehensive community engagement, modelling and expert advice. The desal plant is an essential pillar in our region's resilience to drought and climate change. Construction expected to start late 2024. When complete, it will add up to 30 million litres per day of rainfall-independent drinking water capacity to Hunter Water’s system, or about 15 per cent of the region's average daily needs. https://lnkd.in/gywhvMak

Grey to Green SuDS in action 🙌 Last week when our Landscape Managers were hand-weeding the planted areas around Exchange Place in Sheffield, a burst water pipe from works nearby was sending a torrent into some of the beds for most of the day. One bed filled and slowly overflowed like they are supposed to. These planted areas contain our very own special SuDS substrate, which is designed to quickly infiltrate large volumes of water before the system slowly releases it. We’ve also used this SuDS substrate across Mansfield as part of the town’s Sustainable Flood Resilience Project. If you would like to find out more about our specialist soils, please email frontdesk@greenestate.org 🙂

Last week, our co-founder Bruna C. Attila, PMP, CFM, LEED AP ND, had the honor of sharing insights with WYPR about the critical issue of sea level rise and its potential impact on waterfront projects in Baltimore. This conversation highlights the crucial role of proactive floodplain management, a central focus of our work at B&D Environmental. Our expertise in floodplain management consulting is more than a service; it's a commitment to building resilient communities. Let's keep the conversation going on how strategic planning and innovative solutions can fortify our cities against the challenges presented by rising sea levels! #sealevelrise #climatechange #floodresilience #floodrisk #wypr #npr

🌿 Nature-based solutions are resilient and multi-functional ways to approach environmental and social problems. 🍃 Examples range from green roofs, rain gardens, and stormwater ponds to simply planting trees in a neighborhood. These types of solutions are especially appreciable in cities that are heavily impacted by climate change. 🪙 Not only do they benefit people and planet, they also benefit our "pockets"! They are frequently more cost-effective than alternatives. ⚛️ Applying a nature-based solutions framework, routed in scientific and traditional ecological knowledge, holds promise in helping to resolve the challenges of our time.
“Focusing on drought resilience and investing in natural infrastructure can improve watershed health and function as a physical buffer against the impacts of future droughts. Natural infrastructure won’t solve Alberta’s drought problem overnight, but it’s an important solution for our tool box that provides many benefits and should be invested in for our future.” Op-Ed by Josée Méthot, senior policy specialist at the International Institute for Sustainable Development. https://lnkd.in/gRAUUD-5

🔍 New Blog Alert! The latest LSE Progressing Planning blog post explores the unfair impacts of flood-risk management in Dar es Salaam's Msimbazi River Basin. Despite local efforts to adapt, the displacement and relocation reveal deep injustices, hitting landholders unevenly. Authored by Erica Pani, Maddy Diment, Mwajuma Mshana, and Martina Manara, the piece highlights the complex challenges of ensuring social and environmental justice in urban climate policies. The participatory Msimbazi Opportunity Plan fails to provide fair compensation, underscoring the need for just treatment of affected communities. https://zurl.co/e7Tt

Founder of J. Nucci Consulting, LLC, a NYS Certified Woman Owned Business Enterprise for Climate Adaptation Consulting and Presentation Coaching
On Monday night the Village of Owego's Board of Trustees approved the Tioga County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Update and the Village of Owego's Jurisdictional Annex to that plan. Below is a photo of the award we received for this plan from the American Planning Association's Hazard Mitigation and Disaster Recovery Planning Division. Our annex was selected given the extensive and productive collaboration amongst the awardees: Barton and Loguidice, J. Nucci Consulting LLC, Southern Tier 8 Regional Board, the Village of Owego, and Tioga County, NY. Our jurisdictional annex is a forward-looking hazard mitigation plan that integrates four NYS Climate Smart Communities program actions: PE7: climate vulnerability assessment, PE7: climate adaptation plan, PE7: evaluate policies for climate resilience, and PE7: climate-resilient hazard mitigation plan. More good news on the Village of Owego's Climate Smart Communities program participation to come! And by the way...it is really hard to photograph a transparent and reflective lucite award, but after many tries and some help this is the final result. #ClimateSmartCommunities #HazardMitigationPlan #ClimateAdaptation #SouthernTier8
