About us

We’re Yorkshire Water. The people trusted to take care of Yorkshire’s most valuable natural resource. On the surface, it sounds simple. We manage and look after the region’s water. But water is not quite like anything else. We’re not like any other business – and nowhere is quite like Yorkshire. Our work means much more than just supplying clean drinking water, taking away wastewater and looking after the region’s coast and countryside. We’re an integral part of Yorkshire life and millions of people who live and work here rely upon us, every single day. We look after communities, protect the environment and plan ahead to look after Yorkshire’s water, today, tomorrow, always. 24/7, 365, we provide essential water and wastewater services to every corner of the Yorkshire region and play a key role in the region’s health, wellbeing and prosperity. That means over 5 million customers, and the millions of people who visit Yorkshire each year rely on us, every day. 140,000 businesses also depend upon the water we supply and the wastewater we take away to provide goods and services that support the economy – not only in Yorkshire, but across the United Kingdom and beyond.

We’ve started work to reduce the number of discharges and improve the water quality in Mill Beck and the river Derwent. Our partners Mott MacDonald Bentley | MMB will construct a new storage tank to hold excess wastewater flows during periods of heavy or prolonged rainfall. The project will begin in October and is expected to be completed in spring 2025. Additional projects in nearby villages Scrayingham and West Lilling are also taking place to reduce discharges into the river Derwent and Black Dike. This will be done by separating the surface water network from the current combined sewer system. For more information go to; https://ow.ly/l57Y50THwr9

Our contract partner, Peter Duffy Limited, is working on two schemes to reduce storm overflow discharges in Selby. Work has already begun on constructing a new sewage pumping station with a large capacity storage tank to significantly reduce discharges into Hagg Bush Dike by holding excess flows and returning these for treatment. In November, they’ll be upgrading and refurbishing the storm overflow at Shipyard Road, Selby, to help reduce discharges. The work is part of our £180m investment by the end of April 2025 and once complete, the projects will significantly reduce discharges and improve water quality in the river Ouse and Hagg Bush Dike. Quote: "These projects are part of a £180m investment by the end of April 2025 to reduce discharges from storm overflows across the region. They will help to improve water quality in the area by reducing the amount and frequency of discharges, which is important to us and our customers."

✨ We’re incredibly proud of our Waste Resolution Jetting Technician Olly, who recently received a District Commander’s appreciation for his heroic actions when he came across a fire in Huddersfield town centre. 🥰 While on standby shift and heading to a job, Olly noticed smoke coming from a takeaway with flats above it. Without hesitation, he parked his lorry, called emergency services, and rushed into the building to warn residents and help them to safety. Thanks to his quick thinking, everyone was safely evacuated before the fire service arrived and tackled the blaze. Julian King, Huddersfield Watch Commander at West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “What Olly did that day was truly selfless and went above and beyond. Whereas some people might have carried on with their day Olly not only alerted us, but actually went out of his way to alert the residents as well. At scenarios like this early warning is critical and I have no doubt with his actions Olly has saved people from potential serious harm. He should be very proud of himself and that’s why I contacted my District Commander to make sure Olly’s bravery was recognised.” In response, Olly, humbly said: “I just did what I thought any other person would do. The last thing I wanted was for anyone to be injured, trapped, or worse if the fire spread. It was just instinct to try and help.” Well done, Olly! 💙 Pictured: Olly with District Commander Dale Gardiner

Did you catch last night’s episode of Yorkshire Great & Small with Dan & Helen? 🤔📺 If you did, you might have spotted our SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), Top Withens, being featured as Dan & Helen took a tour around Haworth and the local area to explore the work of the Bronte sisters. Top Withens is a popular site for Bronte fans as its rumoured to be the inspiration for Wuthering Heights. 📖 The site is an important habitat for lots of species of birds and we’ve got an exciting restoration plan, including erosion prevention, biodiversity additions and building resilience to the moors, which we’ll work with partners to undertake. 😍 If the episode has inspired you to take a walk, we also have some amazing reservoirs you can visit while you’re in the area, including Walshaw Dean, Widdop and Lower Laithe. Have you visited the area? ⬇️ Channel 5

We’ve started work to reduce the number of discharges into the river Aire at Rawcliffe and West Cowick near Goole. Our partners Morrison Water Services and Sapphire Utility Solutions Ltd are upgrading the sewage pumping station at Royal Oak Rawcliffe. The scheme will not only improve operational efficiency of the pumping station but also reduce discharges into the river. The £1m investment at West Cowick sewage pumping station includes the installation of new storage to hold rainfall and wastewater during wet weather. Once completed it will reduce discharges from the pumping station by 75%. For more information go to; https://ow.ly/uhPT50TBUH2
