Restoring Nature, One Principle at a Time 🌱 "A core focus of the GBS workshop was a deep dive into the heart of ecological restoration. Guided by experts from BGCI, @Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) and more, our trainers explored how to bring degraded lands back to life. Focusing on the SER ecological recovery wheel, the group learnt how to assess all the different attributes of ecosystem integrity and how to compare a site against a reference model. The aim is to promote a more holistic approach to restoration projects with a strong emphasis on recovering biodiversity. 🍃 #EcologicalRestoration #GBSWorkshop #TrainTheTrainer "

The first-ever UNESCO and IUCN global assessment of the status and trends of species in #WorldHeritage sites is now available. The World Heritage Convention that protects these habitats is especially unique due to the ways in which it deals with both natural and cultural heritage! This report highlights how critical these sites are to preserving the diversity of life on Earth. Biodiversity is not only essential for human survival but also supports vital ecosystem functions. Take a look at the report today to learn more about the vital role played by #WorldHeritage sites to protect biodiversity! https://lnkd.in/diqk6qT6 #ForNature #YearInReview

To celebrate #WorldWaterDay 💧 let's highlight the vital importance of clean water for ecosystems and people. In #SouthTyrol, Eurac Research's Institute for #AlpineEnvironment conducts extensive monitoring to assess river health. Using chemical-physical methods and analysis of #macroinvertebrates, our #limnologist team explores the #biodiversity of mountain streams across 120 sampling sites. The research investigates the biodiversity of benthic macroinvertebrates, crucial indicators of water quality. These findings guide #conservation efforts and track long-term ecological shifts. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dR8fYieV

Ports are vital to prosperity, but have severely disrupted marine ecosystems around the world. Systems like this one help make our ports a bit more livable for marine life. In addition, ports are huge air polluters. For example, the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach emit smog equivalent to the average emissions of 6 million vehicles. Sperra’s Solar Reef™️ takes this approach of living seawalls one step further, to also provide clean energy needed to electrify ports, cleaning up the air for the people who live and work around them. 🌊 Bringing back underwater life with StoneReefs 🌊 We understand that our product might be a bit complex to grasp, so we've created this video to help illustrate it. Natural terrains serve as crucial habitats for underwater life. However, habor development often disrupts these terrains, leading to a loss of biodiversity. Our reef modules are designed to imitate natural terrains, helping to restore and enhance blue biodiversity. Interested in an agile solution to improve blue biodiversity? 🌲 Wilderness areas are being lost at an alarming rate, and there is a critical need to recognise their value given the climate and biodiversity crises. 🏕️ Research by geographers at The University of Leeds, led to the development of a new wilderness quality index set out in the EU 2020 Biodiversity Strategy through the use of novel spatial modelling methods, and collaboration with Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the Scottish National Parks. 🌍 The global impact spans from the US, where five national parks have been mapped using the techniques guiding park management plans to underpin the Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources expansion of China’s national parks and plans for a wilderness preservation system. 👉 Read more about the research here: https://ow.ly/2L5F50TuuwH #UsingGeography

For WORLD OCEAN DAY we’re celebrating the exciting discovery by Fundación Rewilding Chile, offspring of Tompkins Conservation, of rare red hydrocorals (Errina antarctica) in the Patagonian sea at new latitudes and depths. The incredible findings, made in concert with the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, were published in Scientific Report, part of renowned journal Nature, and shed new light on Patagonia’s largely unexplored and little-understood marine ecosystems. A healthy ocean is critical to solving the climate and biodiversity crises. The discovery of these spectacular corals and the diversity of life that they harbor highlights the importance of creating marine protected areas around the world, especially in vulnerable hotspots of biodiversity, and in continuing the exploration of the Patagonia sea and other little-explored ocean regions. Who knows what other unknown wonders thrive beneath the waves? @nature_the_journal @unep @unclimatechange #OceanClimateAction #Rewilding #MarineProtection #30x30 #worldoceanday
