👏 An important initiative toward the effort to move from research to operations in our operational ability to map distributions of species and habitats using ‘Species Distribution Models’ as a complement to assessments now possible with databases such as OBIS and GBIF.

Need seabed data? We want to hear from you! We need our marine science community to tell us your priority areas for new seabed mapping surveys through the GA-hosted AusSeabed Survey Coordination Tool. The tool offers an invaluable opportunity for the Australian seabed mapping community to share upcoming survey plans and identify areas of interest for potential collaboration. You can also submit specific requests for surveys to be considered by the Australian Hydrographic Office (AHO) for inclusion in the HydroScheme Industry Partnership Program (HIPP): Australia’s largest-ever systematic hydrographic survey activity. The submissions will aid preparation of the AHO’s next annual HydroScheme plan and help prioritise the processing and release of legacy data from across Australia’s seabed mapping agencies. All HIPP requests submitted are confidential and individually considered by the AHO. Preparing for sea-level rise thanks to hydrography

In many coastal areas worldwide, sea levels are rising, and even small increases, combined with high tides and storm surges, can have devastating consequences. But fear not! Hydrography—the science of mapping and measuring bodies of water—offers solutions for monitoring changes, identifying vulnerable areas, and preparing for the future. 🔍 Monitoring Changes: Hydrographic surveys collect data on ocean parameters like depth (bathymetry), tides, and sea level. By integrating data from various sources and ensuring interoperability, we can track sea-level rise more effectively. 🌐 Beyond Nautical Charts: Hydrographers now provide marine spatial data beyond traditional nautical charts. This digital information allows for mapping and analysis, supporting a wide range of applications. Interoperability is key as we address economic and environmental challenges. 🌎 Global Impact: Sea-level rise affects coastlines, offshore energy infrastructure, and communities. Understanding factors like gravitational forces and seabed shape helps us prepare. The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) plays a crucial role in setting standards for navigation. Remember, we’re all in the same boat when it comes to climate change. As the main tool for his PhD research, A.S.M. Alauddin Al Azad developed a basin-scale ADCIRC+SWAN model forced with tides, winds, pressure, and wave spectra. The development results are just published! We’re now using this model to investigate the contribution of wind-seas and swells in the Atlantic to long-term mean sea level change and variability in coastal waters. #CoastalSeaLevelChange #WindWaves

CORAL REEF NEWS: These Innovative Landers Will Examine Coral Reefs in the Gulf of Mexico Scientists plan to use what they learn to help restore communities harmed by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Aboard the deck of the Nancy Foster, more than a dozen safety-gear-clad scientists and crew gather. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) research vessel is in the Gulf of Mexico to aid a test launch of benthic landers—deep-sea autonomous research platforms. Using colossal winches and cables, the team maneuvers a pair of 2,500-pound triangular aluminum cage-like structures, studded with what appear to be orange hard hats, into the water. The University of Rhode Island built landers are outfitted with a suite of software, cameras and specimen-collection apparatus that will enable them to remain deployed almost three miles below the surface on a unique one-year mission.
