As the Bay Area seeks to reform transit governance to deliver a seamless, rider-focused system, it's important to take a look at successful global models. Join us for a webinar on Nov. 2 from 12-1 PST with Thomas Geier of EMTA - European Metropolitan Transport Authorities and our Policy Director Ian Griffiths to learn about the diversity of European metropolitan governance models among EMTA's 34 members, and discuss which might be most applicable to the Bay Area. https://lnkd.in/gRnJBV3b

#EVENT | Yesterday, the House of the Dutch Provinces (HNP) and ITEM/Institute for Transnational and Euregional cross-border cooperation and Mobility hosted their third annual event as part of the #EURegionsWeek. What is the impact of increased sustainability of infrastructure and mobility on an EU level and how does it affect cross-border regions? 📣 We started with an opening interview with Prof. dr. Anouk Bollen-Vandenboorn, ITEM-Director, and Arthur Van Dijk, HNP President and King's Commissioner of the Province of North-Holland. What’s needed in cross-border #regions to realize transnational #sustainable European corridors? According to Bollen, #research is vital for realizing transnational and #sustainable European corridors, which ITEM can provide. Van Dijk agrees, as good policies depend on good research. Panel 1️⃣: How to use the lessons learned from strategic projects on sustainable transport infrastructure? Markus Bangen, Turi Fiorito and Hans de Meij give their reflections. A lack of political commitment hampers #mobility & infrastructure projects in the regions. Bangen, "We have to see these projects as #joint projects." Fiorito stressed: "We sometimes forget that long-term political #commitment comes from two sides of the border." And De Meij concludes with: "It requires courage to make it work." Panel 2️⃣: How can young people contribute to the future of sustainable transport and mobility in Europe? With Robert-Jan Van der Zwaag, Jenna van Roovert and Guy Dumoulin. The young professionals are critical of the incorporation of #young people in #sustainability debates. Van der Zwaag: "Young people are often forgotten when making plans. They are seen as a way to promote, but not really incorporate in the plans. Especially on sustainability." Panel 3️⃣: how do we tackle cross-border practical barriers regarding rail, pipelines, ports & inland shipping in the EU? With Karin De Schepper, Lieselot Marinus, Herald Ruijters and Martin Unfried. A lack of #infrastructure, leads to obstacles for further sustainable connectivity in the border regions. Ruijters says: "Infrastructure is literally washed away in some member states and we need to do something about this." For that, commitments need to be turned into actions. A letter of intent will simply not suffice, you need reliable #policies. Panel 4️⃣: How to fasten the transition towards sustainability on a cross-border level? With Arthur Van Dijk, Frans Weekers and Udo Sieverding. In conclusion, a lot is already in place, but we need smart, strategic plans to connect the dots and make ambitions reality. There are many best practices in Europe left unexplored that we in the Benelux and Germany can turn to for inspiration. As Van Dijk puts it: "We need political #leadership with a vision. If we don't have the guts to decide, nothing will happen." Missed the event? You can always rewatch: https://lnkd.in/eGgtfneE #EU

On Tuesday, I attended the 41st meeting of the Governing Board of CEDR, the Conference of European Directors of Roads. This Governing Board took place at the same time as PIARC's World Road Congress in Prague. CEDR brings together 29 European road authorities with the aim of promoting excellence in road management. In 2024, Flanders will chair CEDR, and we have discussed our priorities and planned activities at the Governing Board. We aim to strengthen the role of CEDR and its strategic goals, with a focus on addressing challenges such as ageing infrastructure and new technologies for green and smart mobility. Our goal is to accelerate the transition to becoming a digital road authority, with a special focus on digital asset management and digital traffic management. Together, we want to create a sustainable and future-proof infrastructure for our road users. #CEDR #GB #PIARCWRC23 #AWV

Last week, I had the great opportunity to participate as CER (Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies) at the Informal Transport Council of 3 and 4 April, preparing our association's intervention to EU 27 Transport Ministers and providing the sector's perspective for a dedicated session on International Rail Connections. 🛤 Finalising the #RailCapacity Regulation is critical to deliver more capacity and offer flexibility to the sector, also through digital means. 🎫 Ticketing is an issue and the sector is working on it. A balanced approach is needed, where sector solutions #OSDM already provide a solution. 🚅 #Railfreight is at a crossroads. Support is needed to ensure a level playing field with road, and avoid a reverse modal shift. It was also the occasion to outline CER's vision for the next 5 years 'On Track for Europe', which CER is launching on 17 April in the European Parliament. ▶ Register now: https://bit.ly/3PVxjUT Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024 #railway #OnTrackForEurope #EUTransport
