🪠If you work with slurry suction pumps, then this one is for you. 🪠 In 2021, one of our customers from a gold mine in Mauritania came to us searching for ideas on how to improve a poorly designed suction pipe arrangement. They were using a lined steel eccentric reducer, connected to an expansion joint and straight spool. But the expansion joint kept failing, creating ongoing maintenance for the team. They needed a simpler setup that didn’t need constant attention. So we suggested he look at a custom mining hose reducer. Mining hose reducers are a good fit for slurry pump pipework because: 1. They eliminate the need for an expansion joint entirely. That cuts down on inventory and replacement costs ✂️ 2. Mining hose can better absorb vibration and noise, reducing stress on the pump itself 🫨 3. It’s easier to fit and remove mining hose for pump maintenance and they can be customised to match any bore size 📏 Our engineers worked with them to redesign the arrangement and build two Slurryflex mining hose reducers with custom flanges and flushing ports. It’s a simple solution to a common problem. 🛠️ Three steps to prolong slurry elbow lifespan used by a Western Australian gold mine 🛠️ This gold mine had trouble with rubber lined steel bends on their cyclone feed only lasting 3-6 months. ⏳ They were unable to absorb the impact of high velocity slurry. ⛹️♀️ Unpredictable failures caused a lot of production stoppages. ⚠️ 📐 Step 1 - Design: With our help, they maintenance team re-designed the feed line to allow for 5D radius bends. A longer sweeping bend means less aggressive wear. 🛡 Step 2 - Product: Ceramic lined mining hose was selected to replace rubber lined steel. The rubber hose absorbed and dispersed the energy of impacting particles. It lasted 5x longer than the rubber lined steel elbow. 🔔 Step 3 - Predictability: A simple indicator box was installed on the hose which allows the maintenance team to detect when less than 30% of the wear liner remains. The importance of quality construction could not have been emphasized any better as it was done by Justin (1932). He indicated that "an entirely safe and substantial design may be entirely ruined by careless and shoddy execution, and the failure of the structure may very possibly be the result. Careful attention to details of construction is, therefore, fully as important as the preliminary investigation and design". As I reflect on my professional journey, I have come to appreciate the fulfilling journey it has been to have had a chance to play a role in tailings facility lifecycle phases such as project conception, design, construction and operations. It has been a great pleasure to see how crucial tailings management has become in responsible mining. So crucial that one cannot go without the other...
